I registered and downloaded Star Trek Online and made a character...and I have no clue what to do. I have never played an online game before.

Any tips?

Start by doing the tutorial missions. They will get you up to speed really fast, about everything that can be done in the game.

That is a good advice.
I think also that learning all the stuff is part of the fun.
You can always of course ask questions about the game here, I am sure ppl will help.
The STO Wiki is also a good place to visit for some information:

I got hooked on PvE early on and quickly made Vice Admiral. I'm working my way through the rest of the game now. Start in Admiral Quinn's office on Space Dock. Also the Mirror Universe PvEs are fantastic for picking up XP and good quality tech.

I've had good luck with the drops in those also..

The Defari Invasion is fun (if you like killing Borg). :-)

I'm doing the same with some of my toons - none of them have played every mission.

Oh, and when you reach the captain rank, don't get the Galaxy class, no matter what your speciality is. At the level get the any of the other two ships. I say this because in the next rank, you'll get the Sovereign, which is far better and a good multi-purpose ship - perhaps the best of such vessels in the game for the Federation, provided you tune it with the right consoles.

Later on, you'll need a fast ship capable of burst damage for the PvE and PvP play, and even for some of the story missions. Either the Defiant or the Intrepid are fine for that, especially kitted with VA stuff.

My newly promoted Captain went with the Intrepid and its an amazing ship.

I actually leveled up to the rank of Captain while doing one of the Romulan episodes and I wanted to complete the current mission before heading back to Earth for my new ship. So I chugged along in my trusty old Oberth class... which got repeatedly blown to bits by a Romulan D'deridex flagship. Frustrated, I left the mission. Went to claim my shiny new Intrepid class. Kitted it out. Gave it a fresh coat of paint. And went Romulan warbird hunting. This time round, the warbird couldn't even scratch my new ship's hull. That's how good the Intrepid is.

No wonder. You skipped two ship tiers and tried to do Captain level stuff with a startership.
And you missed out on the awesome Nova class!
