Amy Winehouse dead at 27.

It's really hard to feel any sympathy for her. You have the money to get high, you have the money to go to rehab. Even her handlers should have had some sense to get her cleaned up.

The 27 Club, also occasionally known as the Forever 27 Club or Club 27, is a name for a group of influential rock music artists who died at the age of 27.

Even ignoring the part about "rock music artists", Amy Winehouse was in no way, shape or form influential compared to the people in that club.

Well, then it's a good thing she's listed among the three dozen artists who died at 27 outside of the "canonical" group. Unless you're suggesting that she can't match the influence and notoriety of the likes of Louis Chauvin and Sean Patrick McCabe.

Be sure to click onto the talk page for that wiki article to see even more people taking the opportunity of a new young person dying to masturbate over their own musical connoisseurship.

I have no clue who she is as I pretty much just ignore today's music, that said I just saw that she was 27 and remembered the 27 club.

My point (which I didn't convey well, admittedly) is that an analogous 26, 28, 29 or 30 club would be more likely to look like like that list of artists outside of the canonical group to which Amy belongs, which makes the whole 27 club link pointless unless you're including her among the big names.

To be honest with you I've never really been impresses with the main list of musicians.

I've never understood the whole God complex of a bunch of dope fiends half of which died choking on their own vomit.

Sad..and somewhat unnecessary was her death:borg:
While I never was a big of Amy Winehouse, I do see why people liked her music..she had voice, both musical and personal, that separated her from the big mass of singers.
It is tragic that alcohol and drugs ruled her life so much..but also that she was unable to break free from the addiction.

If only someone had tried to make her go to rehab.

I know, I'm a terrible person.

I hate to be inviting disrespect for the dead here, but what separates Janis Joplin from Amy Winehouse?

I don't ask to be snarky or coy, but as far as I know they're both young, pop singers with a distinctive voice and a personal style, a couple of mainstream hits and a devoted cult following. If Joplin belongs in the club, why not Winehouse?

(Personally, I'd put Hendrix and Cobain as slightly more influential than Morrison, Joplin or Winehouse, and would have trouble distinguishing those three in terms of influence, with Morrison probably in the #3 spot.)

PS - let's try to keep responses respectful, ok?

Very sad to hear this at the weekend. Not a shock to most people I would imagine. Once she had emphysema I think the writing was on the wall for her.
A shame she recorded so little material and was explioted by the likes of Mark (what do I really do anyway) Ronson.
The singers who have followed her, like Adel Duffy et al, can't hold a candle to her in terms of raw talent.
Goodbye Amy

Joplin and Winehouse? The most obvious response is that time will tell. Joplin's work is still remembered and respected, but it will be a decade or to see if Winehouse's work has held up as much. I couldn't say whether it will or not and I have no familiarity with Winehouse's work. The little that I have heard hasn't interested me very much since her voice doesn't appeal to me.

Okay, this is a new one for me. Apparently Winehouse's family believes she died of alcohol withdrawl.

The British singer, whose body was found on Saturday at her home in London, reportedly ignored doctors’ advice to gradually cut down her alcohol intake and, over the last three weeks her life, stopped drinking entirely.

and

“Abstinence gave her body such a fright they thought it was eventually the cause of her death,” said the source

I'm not a doctor and I don't understand, fully, what the effects heavily abusing alcohol and suddenly stopping are on the body, but this is an interesting development. And, if true, it's sadder to think she might have been trying to get into better shape and that's what killed her.
