Americans fascinated by ...

I used to use a billfold wallet with a coin pouch in it, but I disliked the way it distorts the line of a closely tailored jacket if it's worn in the chest pocket, and I hate even more the feel of carrying it in a rear trouser pocket (not to mention that it can cause sciatica over time).

So I got a full-length wallet instead (this one, as it happens), and a separate coin wallet (similar to this) for change. The coin wallet is, admittedly, less than fashionable, but it distorts the line of trousers much less than the bulkier billfold wallet with coin pouch did with jackets, so the style trade-off is very favourable.

I agree, a big wallet can really ruin the lines of a perfect jacket or wear a pair of trousers out in the wrong places. That's one of the reasons I discontinued carrying a wallet on me: now bills goes into a money clip, cards into a card holder, and spare changes into a pocket. I still have a wallet for the bulkier stuff, but it usually goes into my suitcase or backpack.

I've seen plenty of these in my life:

My grandfather keeps his change in one, and has since I was a kid. Something about the whole design creeps me out, though.

The only reason I don't carry a wallet is because it is literally a pain in the ass. I do use a small leather credit card holder for my various cards and I carry it in the front pocket of my jeans most of the time.

Oh yeah. My grandfather carried one of those too, except his was gray. I remember seeing it as a kid around 1976 or so. I asked him what it was and he showed me. Told me he'd been carrying his change in it since the 1940's.

^ From what I've seen, though, nobody actually uses that $1 coin. The USA really needs to phase out the $1 bill for it to take off.

Americans are really hesitant to get rid of the dollar bill. Or even change the design at all. I like the dollar bill. I hate the dollar coin. They just get in the way.

I guess I had forgotten about that. We haven't had 1 or 2 dollar bills for so I long I had forgotten.

$1 and $2 coins make using vending machines a lot more pleasant.
Frankly, I think we need to mandate that vending machines start accepting debit cards.

I just don't know where I would keep something like that. I have enough shit in my pockets as it is.

I'm surprised the banks haven't pushed for this yet. Seems like a golden opportunity for them to do some more gouging of their customers.

We were hesitant too, but then the government realized that the way to make us adopt it was to phase out the dollar bill. I actually find dollar coins much more convenient, as I know bills are only for larger denominations, and it's easy to tell a dollar coin from the rest.

They have a couple of those at my college. I don't think I'll use them though, seems perfect for 'card skimmers'.

I have one, not like that one though, it's a rectangular black pleather one, with two metal bands at the top that you squeeze to open it. Normally I use my debit card for everything, but I need a lot of quarters for the laundry machines, so I keep them in there. It's the only time I use cash really, and to have to take $20 out of the ATM, plus the $2.50 fee (which is the same amount as the load of laundry) sucks.

From memory, quite a dew people in the UK weren't in favour of the £1 coin replacing the £1 note, would we go back some 2 decades later. I think not.
