AMC - American Movie Crap?

AMC hasn't been a good station in a long time. I remember back in the days when they didn't show any movies beyond the 60's and never had any commercials (except for a few station related ones between movies).

Even then they were up to crap like censoring dialogue in movies (i.e. Patton). If a movie deserves to be considered a classic, it deserves to be shown uncut and uncensored, and in a widescreen format.

Hmmm...I didn't know about that, but then I've never seen (or interested in) Patton.

The AMC phenomenon has struck down A&E too. It used to be the home of PBS worthy drama. Now, we're treated to crappy reality shows. Ditto with Bravo. They've not only become "the other gay channel," they run endless reality competitions and shows like "The Real Housewives of Orange County," which has added a third show to its franchise, which is, you guessed a reality show competition.

I've said this before, I'll say it again, the vast majority of US TV today, including the endless news analysis shows that all but tell us what color the presidential candidates stool was today and why they think its color was a vast right or left wing conspiracy, is just lowest common denominator TV. When BSG is done next year, I'll have no use for TV until Caprica starts. I may watch Chuck and Heroes some while I wait for new Who in 2010. I've got a buddy in Atlanta now who has ditched DTV and Cable for the antennae because of this. I'm just about at the same place.

All these channels "going to the crapper." Or is it that people who think that are going more and more out of touch? Kinda sad. Worse I feel the same about many of these channels too. Oh well gaming and other things give me even more entertainment than these channels and shows used to give me.

So I guess it's only a matter of time before they have a Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, Disaster Movie film festival.

Yeah, I saw the writing on the wall when they started advertising Catwoman. But my first clue that they were abusing thier name was when AMERICAN movie classics kept airing Das Boot.

AMC, which used to stand for "American Movie Classics" can no longer be called such.

They're actually showing Star Trek Nemesis on AMC.

I think I need to puke now.

Is this worse than Sci Fi showing Braveheart?

No way dude... Nemesis is the best of then all.... Well, at least the last part where he orders ramming speed...

You people must not know how to read, or just ignored the one poster who wrote the reason why AMC had to switch formats because a lot of you are bitching the same damn thing.

Yes, it sucks that AMC has commercials. Yes, it sucks that AMC runs their own original shows. Yes, it sucks to have that stupid info bar on the bottom of the screen, but they had to change because Fox and Warner jacked up their prices, so rather than squeeze more cash from you, they changed format that had more recent films. I rather enjoyed watching Troy, the older Jack Ryan movies, Die Hard movies, and other movies that you do not see much on the other cable channels, especially when you do not have the "good" movie channels of HBO, TMC, Showtime, and others.

If you do not like it, watch the Fox classic movie channel and the TCM one.

You may want to check out The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Some of the BSG staff are moving over to it from what I read in TVGuide.

The opening monologue is terrific:

Patton: Now there's another thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any messages saying that "we are holding our position." We're not holding anything. Let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we're not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy. We're going to hold onto him by the nose and we're going to kick him in the ass. We're going to kick the hell out of him all the time and we're going to go through him like crap through a goose!

From the same monologue:Patton: Thirty years from now, when you're sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee and he asks you, "What did you do in the great World War II," you won't have to say, "Well... I shoveled shit in Louisiana."

That's not the point...the point is that they are redefining "classic" by including Catwoman, et. al., just like A&E is moving away from their original mission to include reality shows like Intervention. Personally, I find Intervention to be neither art nor entertainment. It should be on the Voyeur TV channel. I've done drugs, I really don't care to watch other people self-destruct, and I really, really don't care to sit through some of the stereotypes that they actually throw out there and even some bad information about the drugs these people use, and I really don't care to sit there and watch these dysfunctional families play like that person is the only one with the problem. They need to own up to it themselves, but you rarely if ever see that happening. People are "entertained" by this? That's a perverse idea of entertainment. The worst part is, the glut of reality TV shows means it is virtually inescapeable, so it's not like I can just turn to another channel and leave it there. If I flip to Bravo, well, there's another reality show, only this time its about a pissy, OCD gay real estate agent on a power trip who surrounds himself with enablers, or its about a bunch of prima donna housewives, or a self-indulgent lesbian who is trying to market her name as its own franchise, or it's a a spin off off of Real Housewives, or another show about another gay real estate agent, only this one is a kid, or it's food game show, fashion game show, or hair game show...same premise, different hosts. My god, one of them is even moving to Lifetime! If I flip to VH-1, we see New York and the stragglers left behind from their other shows. TruTV? Nope, more voyeurism. News? Nope, endless analysis and more voyeurism. Networks? Same crap, just game show format. Skiffy? God forbid I tune in on Wednesday. Sorry, but I have better things to do with my evenings than change channels to avoid seeing this crap.

Worst of all for the network-they were never able to complain publicly about the shaft they were getting at the time. Time Warner owns the 2nd largest cable company in the US, and Rupert Murdoch/News Corp owned the rest of the world...:shifty: or at least trying to, making raising a stink about the price hike by the 2 studios syndication divisions for the older films unwise, only to then have to deal with those 2 companies' sister divisions for distribution and other program acquisitions...
And while many movie critics blasted the format shift in articles and columns, none of them bothered to dig any deeper, allowing the perception that nuAMC was something that was preferred over continuing running classics and remaining commercial free. :(
They created a successful business..too successful it seems, and competitors swooped in to emulate them, pulling the rug out from under them in the process.
