Ambassador V'Lar on Lost

commodore64

Vice Admiral

I really enjoyed Fallen Hero and have always thought the actress who played V'Lar, Fionnula Flanagan, was awesome. Imagine my surprise to see her show up in Lost the other night.

Why did I like her? She seemed to nicely set up the relationship between Kirk and Spock. She likes and respects the humans, but seems to believe they are juvenile (as T'Pol did when she first met the crew). Through the episode, I think V'Lar appreciates the humans more as they react on their gut and help her. Successfully.

What did you think of Fionnula and V'Lar? Or what did you think of Fallen Hero.

I'm old enough to remember Flanagan when she was a young actress.
I very much liked the character and was disappointed that she never turned up again on the show. Would have been a nice nod to continuity if she had appeared even briefly in Vulcan arc.

Odd that you bring this up. I watched this episode today and was thinking exactly what you posted. She made the episode special and the first time I saw it I was sure she would be returning in future episodes. That was a missed opportunity.

Flanagan's just one of many actresses that you see cropping up all over the place in things. She was in TNG as well, playing Data's mother. I liked Ambassador V'Lar too.

Another guy you see everywhere is Locke from Lost. Recently saw Next Gen's Pegasus again, and I didn't even know it was Terry O Quinn the first time around! :)

I keep thinking of her as Data's mother as well. Everytime I see her I have the urge to shout out "It's Data's mom!!!!"

Man, I totally forgot she was Data's mom. As for her "being around for a while," I don't remember seeing her in anything. Jinx or Mach5, do you have any shows (television or movies) you can mention?

As for "my surprise" -- it's really more about the show Lost. They went to see Faraday's mom (?), and Flanagan turns up. Don't understand? Well, we saw his mother and she was someone else, but we're not sure if this is really Faraday's mother and ... It's a long story. Watch Lost.

Oh, I'm not much of a Lost fan. With that show, it was always one step forward, two steps back, so I gave up.

And apart from being Data's mom, I remember seeing in her "The Others" (okay, that was a while ago), "Four Brothers" (it's her murder that they investigate there, BTW I love that movie), she was a nun on Nip/Tuck and I think I saw her on SVU (but to be honest, none of that was recently).

I always think that the guest female Vulcans on ENT are much better done than male, and I agree Fionnula Flanigan is very good. The first thing I remember her in was 'How the West Was Won' TV series from the late 70s (I think) with Jim Arness and a young Bruce Boxleitner.

Honestly, I can't name anything off the top of my head (I forgot she was Data's mom, too). She did a lot of guest roles decades ago... I just remember her face. It's so distinctive, it's quite memorable.

I went to IMDB and found some shows I've seen her in:
Murder She Wrote; Columbo; a lot of shows in the '70s.

And she also was in an episode of DS9.

she has been around on lost for awhile.
all the way back in season three after the swan blew up and desmond became lost in time.
she was known just as mrs hawking then.
