Amazon UK are weird
Actually, I originally had that, and then I toyed with a wordplay on us/US, then thought better of it. At one point, it looked like I was going to run into the same we/it problem.
When I read your post, I could almost hear my old English master having a fit!

I had Fearful Symmetry pre-ordered for months, then they emailed me saying there's no stock available, so I cancelled it, and ordered it from another site, they too sent me an email saying there was no stock.
Then I went back to Amazon, and there it was in stock, although now no longer discounted.

I had my Fearful pre-ordered for about a month, i didn't get an email about the out of stock though. Got the book through this afternoon.

I don't tend to use Amazon to get my books (although I do us it to check ISBN numbers) I just go along to the independant book shop in town and order it from there!

I'm just waiting for Greater than the Sum and the MyrU books, which Amazon UK tells won't be dispatched until 8-12 September

I use Amazon for all my Trek book needs... but I always go for a couple of the marketplace sellers. Several of them are very good with shipping - even based in the UK - and their prices are pretty (GTTS cost me a little under £5) and they have the books at the time of US release too.

I gave up on Amazon themselves about 2 years ago due to all of the craziness you guys have highlighted.

Yeah Caiman are really good for books, CDs and DVDs.

I've had a lot of good dealings with The Book Depository as well.

The Book Depository are particularly good. But they're based in the UK, so it normally takes a little longer for them to get the 'just out' books than Caiman. But the shipping is lightning fast when they finally do offer the books - they're incredibly efficient.

I prefer not having to pay £2.75 p+p for each book so I like having the no-delivery-charge with Amazon UK itself, and I tend to order several books at once, so it can work out quite expensive.

Same here.

It really depends upon your priorities. If you want to get the book quickly within about a week of US release, then a Marketplace seller is best, which often makes it marginally more expensive (though often the Marketplace sellers sell the books for less than Amazon, so with the £2.75 P&P the cost is only slightly more expensive, often measured in pence rather than pounds, and actually sometimes cheaper as well.)

Of course if you don't care about getting it fast, but the cheapest available, then oftentimes Amazon remains the best (out of the options of either Amazon or Markeplace), but it takes a lot longer and can be a lot more unreliable (see above testimonials.)

But Marketplace can also be unreliable, or take a long time. I'm more likely to just order it from Amazon.com if I want it fast.

Now that we can, there was a time when we couldn't.

Just ordered Myriad Universe Book 2 from The Book Depository. See how fast it gets here. I paid £8 but to be honest thats still good for a book that thick.

That's the thing - places like TBD usually have the books a fair bit cheaper than the RRP, so the £2.75 p&p still brings the overall cost to around, if not still below, the RRP anyway. Cheapness + speed = very good.

In regards to grammar: If it were something like "Amazon UK are totally unreliable." Or, "Amazon UK is the fasting growing commercial bookseller.." Then they'd both work out pretty well, as far as British English is concerned anyway. Really when you think about it, there are quite a few differences in the different English speaking regions. Like the UK's "practice" and "practise." Or "License" and "Licence". Or the missing U's and the substituted s's for z's in US English.
Regarding Amazon's weirdness: On one particular occasion i noticed that they already had the next NF book (which didn't have a title or a picture, just "ST: NF number whatever...") I found this to be a little odd since by that point, it hadn't even been written yet.
