It's actually a pretty stupid story I think.
I don't think the Q had a "male/female" concept anymore, if they ever did, at least on TNG. Q even mentioned to Picard once that if he had known Picard was intimidated by women, that he would have appeared as one instead.
So it seems the "male/female" concept was added later on, and really it made no sense to me from a Q perspective.

Considering I found "True Q" extremely boring, I don't see any reason why writers would feel the need to expand on Amanda or her parents.
They did practice something akin to sexual reproduction in VOY "Q and the Grey", so at least Trek stays consistent with itself. However, even then, we have little reason to think that the Q would be male or female, or anything equally mundane. They apparently just pretend to be male and female in that VOY episode for Janeway's benefit, while both participants in the sex act are no doubt simply Q.
What Amanda's parents did sounded like masquerade as well: they didn't need to become a human male and female who could be killed by a tornado in order to conceive Amanda - they became a pair of humans who could be killed by a tornado and have a human daughter named Amanda because that was their idea of fun.

I respectfully half-disagree...The Borg were sissyfied during VGR, but I liked the exploration of the Continuum...
There probably isn't a true male/female thing with the Q's. It's just how they can be filtered so that human minds can comprehend them.
Taking into consideration that Amanda's parents went with the majority when they went to Earth, it's only 'natural' to assume they chose forms which went along that image.
As for Amanda being born a female ... I attribute that to her parent's desire to have her been born human because they became humans themselves.
So they probably had all of the advantages of a Q, but also a human when it came to reproduction (meaning it could have been a female or a male).
But it's a moot point.
Amanda was raised to be human, but biologically speaking she was a Q disguised as a human.

The best scene in True Q was when they're standing outside on the ship.
I don't really care for this episode. I remember reading some time ago about the way that they had intended the episode to go but it had suffered re-writes for some reason at the 11th hour. I can't remember the specifics of how the episode had been intended to go, but I do remember thinking that it sounded much better than how it had panned out in the end. The whole CostumeRiker scene wouldn't have existed for instance, which would have been a shame, since it's the only bit of the episode I appreciated...
