Am I really all that weird for loving the rain so much?

No, you're not weird at all. I enjoy the rain too. particularly this time of year when it's (usually) 100+ degrees out. Plus, when it DOES rain around here, it always makes the grass in my front yard smell nice.

In the annals of history, there will be a great deal of confusion as to why Jeff O'Connor chose to respond personally to like 85% of the posts made while he was gone, and on such a superfluous topic at that. But oh well, whatever.

I grew up in Oregon; I have no choice in the matter. You either love the rain or you don't survive your childhood. :p

And I still love the rain, except for the fact that Bostonians don't seem to know how to drive in it. Rain snarls commute traffic here worse than snow or sleet or ice or thermo-nuclear armageddon, probably.

That's pretty crazy. It reminds me of how this past Winter, it dipped to below 30 degrees Fahrenheit a few times down here in Florida and people were freaking out big-time. Being as traveled as I am, and hailing from New York, it was very amusing. People were talking about how their cars had ice all over them in the morning like it was the end of the world.

You're lucky if it takes rain to get people all pseudo-suicidal like that. Down here, it seems a sheet of ice on one's windshield is enough.

But then again, people call us crazy since we're at risk when it comes to the power of hurricanes. I think Floridians are just... weird. So back and forth.

I love it when it rains. A lot of that probably has to do with it being a pleasant change of pace in So. Cal rather than a frequent annoyance though. I don't know if I'd feel the same way if I lived in Hawaii or Florida or somewhere else where it rains frequently.

Yeah, during mid-year months the rain gets fairly excessive around here. And I live in St. Petersburg, which has been referred to as the 'Lightning Capital' in the past. I have a hard time believing that's true, necessarily, but I can see the basis. It gets kind of wild.

I might not mind if it didn't rain all the fucking time.

Where exactly do you live, if you mean to imply that's how it is where you are?

I usually enjoy the rain because most often it doesn't last too long. If it does it starts to get on my nerves, although I think that's more the dreary overcast sky than the rain per se. Ir rained here a couple days back whilst I was walking in the city; fun to watch most everyone else scurry away under the storefronts.

I know, right? I was at the beach a couple of months ago and I got to see the darnedest thing. The clouds got slightly overcast and a few sprinkles descended; lightning hadn't once been spotted and thunder made no roars. But I kid you not, people were fleeing like they suddenly saw Allied ships on the edge of the water's horizon or something. It was... I could not stop laughing. People were jogging past me, babies confused and dogs equally perplexed. A few small children asked their parents if this was all really necessary, or something to that extent.

The kids realized it was ridiculous, but the adults... not so much.

I love the rain. When it rains really hard, I like to walk outside barefoot and stand in it.

I've done that before. Every time I see this one scene in the movie V for Vendetta, with Natalie Portman's character looking up at the pouring rain, it makes me wish it were pouring outside. One time, it was, and I paused the movie and ran out and rolled with it.

There's nothing quite as soothing as falling asleep while you can hear the rain falling outside your window (prefer an open window for this sort of thing).

It's great meditation to sit in a shelter and listen to the rain on the roof and look out at the rain.

It's pouring down right now and of course I have a window open. I'm actually more likely to sit in the windowsill when it rains than when the sun's out!

Hear, hear. A while back, I had to go in at around two in the morning to help unload the truck and begin stocking product at the retail store I was working at, which was doubly annoying because I was already working either mornings or evenings all throughout the week with no semblance of order because that's just how these things are. (Anyone who's worked grocery can usually attest to this.)

So to say the least, it was hard for me to knock myself out at an appropriate time before that once a week. I found that when it rained outside, I'd open the window and voila, I suddenly stood a chance. Unfortunately, it rarely did at that point, so I discovered a website (rainymood.com) that simulated the experience.

Knowing 'it's a faaaake' was a big issue at first, but gradually I trained my mind to get over it, and... on some nights leading up to my departure I actually managed to sleep four or five hours. :p

All I can say is my life is pretty plain/I like watching the puddles gather rain

I guess it depends what kind of mood I'm in. It either has to be a light summer rain that ends quickly or something really dramatic looking. Anything in the middle and it just annoys me.

I love that song you were quoting!

Depends. I love summer rain...its warm and still refreshing and after it the world smells so great.
Sometimes I also like other rain, cause then you can cuddle yourself in a blanket and observe the rain and listen too it...and sometimes its also nice to be outside...when I was at the meadows in the past getting the horses and it was raining I got all muddy and that actually was quite nice, cause in our world we all are so...clean..so far away from nature.
However if its raining a lot and really cold rain for months and its always windy and grey... then I have enough of the rain and wish for some sun.

TerokNor

Certainly, there's come a point where enough is enough. I remember some old episode of the Twilight Zone where these three astronauts crashed on a planet (or... something, I don't really remember) and it never, ever stopped raining. And gradually they all went crazy! :wtf:

That's pretty cool, that you felt that way while tending to the horses, though. I'd be right there with ya.

Having lived in the DC metro area the first 26 years of my life, I loathed the humidity, the muck, and the excess of rain the area gets. Having lived in Los Angeles for four years, I find I miss that same excessive rain --particularly in the summer-- more than ever. Those crazy summer storms that come out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly are amazing.

That's how it is here in the Tampa Bay Area much of the time. One moment they're here, then the next moment you'd think they never were. We also get 'sun showers', where there don't appear to be any dark clouds in the sky (sometimes there don't appear to be any clouds in the sky) but the rain falls nonetheless. It's almost universally a light rain, but it sure does scare the tourists.

But it doesn't stop at that for me. I like taking walks in the rain whenever possible.

Come to England; we'll soon knock that sentiment out of you.

(I'm currently killing time waiting for a break in the weather so I can pop out to the Post Office, and it's absolutely pissing it down. :( )

I'd love to go to England! I've seen most of the United States already. The world is next! I'd gladly get things knocked out of me for a chance at England.

Oh to have the opportunity to move somewhere with mountains and rain. Wonder how hard it is to immigrate to British Columbia?

I'll be moving to Vancouver eventually. I'll... let you know. :(

I live in British Columbia (which has a rep for tons of rain) but most of it floats over my city and falls on Vancouver after hitting the mountains. 90% of the rain around here falls at night, so I actually quite like a rainy day.

Most of it falls on Vancouver, eh? Alright!

That is true. Plus the 'ozone smell' that people pick up on is also quite pleasant. It gets around there here, too. So... excessively hot.

Like doubleohfive, I'm in Southern California, Orange to be precise. Having spent my first 42 years in the Southeast, I desperately miss the Summer rains. This sounds like reverse bragging but the day-after-day sunshine gets very boring and the first fall rain shower is like it came straight from God.

I was a bit lucky today: I went to the bank, wearing nothing but sandals, shorts and a T-shirt. I also bought a pair of Wellies and some groceries and the rain didn't (really) begin till I was home again and could write about it here.

Well done, on all accounts.

The rain has just stopped... time to make a dash for it! :D

The world will be relieved to know that I did indeed make it to the post office and back with no rain.

I remember some years back we had a really long hot set of weeks with no rain (yes, it does happen here occasionally). When the weather finally broke, I swear that some people near where I live ran outside to dance like some primitive ritual to thank the gods for the opening of the heavens. It was quite an amusing sight; very tribal.

^^ I recognize the lyrics-- I can even hear how the song sounds in my head-- but I can't place it.

Was that the same heat wave that had people fainting in the subways in London a few years back? If so, you can blame me for it. I made a trip to London hoping to escape the Florida heat that summer. The heat of course followed me.:(

I don't mind the rain, at least not during the winter.

Most of the houses around me use wood-heaters during the winter. The smoke from these wood-heaters aggravates my asthma but on rainy days the smoke is washed away.

Unfortunately this winter has been very dry except we had a far bit of rain last week. In fact we received nearly as much rain in just 36 hours as had fallen in the previous five months.

Hangin' around, nothing to do but frown, rainy days and Mondays always get me down.

I loathe the rain. I get that it's necessary, but the rain needs to understand that it should only fall when I'm indoors and have no pressing need to go outside. When I do need to go outside, it should stop.

Unfortunately, the elements rarely listen to me. :(

As a resident of an area crippled - devastated - by drought for most of the past 25-30 years, I can say with absolute certainty that I will never complain about rain again (barring something as extraordinary and catastrophic as the recent floods in Pakistan occurring here, of course, but hell will freeze over long before anything like that happens here).

I find sunshine and warm weather utterly dispiriting. Nothing lifts my mood like rain does.

Probably the one and same.

Visit our shores more often, would you?

I LOVE the non stop sun that comes with our California summers!

Although a few years with only 70% of normal rainfall made me favor rainy days over dry ones in the winter. The cool-cold (50-65F, 10-19 C), gentle rains are the ones I like. Just as often as we get those, though, we get miserable rains with winds upwards of 20 MPH (32 km/h). Or so the statistics feel, anyway.

I'm feeling cold just typing about it, I look outside the library window and am momentarily surprised to see sunshine.

I think my favorite are nice balmy sunny days when it's not too hot but I don't mind the rain, either. What I really dislike is the snow.

Since I've moved from Ohio to Oregon I don't miss the snow at all but what I do miss is a nice thunderstorm now and then. Here in the Wilamette Valley area the weather is extremely mild. We get a lot of rain but it's a light rain with no real thunderstorms to speak of. There's something dramatic about a nice thunder and lightning storm that I miss from time to time.
