Am I a hypocrite? Or a Victim?

I bought a blu-ray player. After my many posts putting the hate on blu-ray.... I OWN one.

I bought one mainly becuase while hunting for films locally, I found that there were no dvd verisons, but there were blu-ray versions. Or, the bluray version has more features.

So am I a hypocrite? Or is this planned obsolescence at its finest.

Hypocrite? Maybe.

As for the planned obsolescence, I doubt it. Your local retailers are stocking the Blu-ray only on some movies because that's what is selling. As for the additional features, the blu-ray disc simply holds much, much more information. More capacity equals more features.

As long as the Blu-Ray players are backward compatible with regular DVDs (and hopefully play audio CDs and MP3 CDs), it's all okay with me; new technology is good.

I just don't want to be like the guy in Men In Black who said, "Now I have to buy the White Album again." :rommie:

Were you pissed off when you had to buy your first DVD player too?

I won't get blu-ray until I get an HDTV. And I can't justify getting an HDTV until my current TV starts to break down a bit.

Unfortunately, the thing is 15 years old and still going strong. :(

^ Why not donate the old TV to charity? I'm sure the Salvation Army would love it. (This is not sarcasm or a flame, BTW. )

I bought a PS3 last month, so I do now have a blu-ray player, but can't be bother to shell out the cash for an HDTV so I haven't bought any blu-rays yet, obviously.

I guess I will get a HD eventually and some blu-rays, but at this point I just don't care.

Basically you decided to give it a try and found it to be worth it.

I am a firm believer that one should at least have tried something before criticizing it (there are limits though.. i don't need to have anal sex to know i don't like something shoved up my ass ;)) - in my case sushi, hate that stuff - but many people just spout off and repeat some talking points they picked up somewhere.

So good for you.. enjoy it and have fun. My media update will take some time though because of financial reasons and because i want to do it right (good TV and good players still aren't that cheap).

Heh, I only bought it once and it still sounds brilliant!

Same here -except; I won't buy a separate box to watch all the new HD-channels so my problem is that I actually need a new TV :(

Blu-ray is gorgeous technology, especially when things are properly mastered for the format. Doctor No and Casino Royale both look incredible in Blu-ray. Star Trek, regardless of whether it's Abrams's new movie or the OS, looks amazing.

Live and Let Die? They didn't try so hard. Looks like crap.

And yes, you absolutely need a good HD TV to allow the tech to work properly.

And, there's one other thing ... make sure you keep your firmware up to date, as the software is always improving.

HA thats the thing tho. My VHS collection was made obsolete by an upgrade (dvd) that was in fact a technological step. So it wasn't so bad. Heck, it flat out ment my films were not just sitting there disolving (not as fast anyways)

Bluray however, is a disk that holds more. Its 1/2 of a step imho. Seeing it at 1080p does't make me like a film more, just like a lot of pretty effects (like in avatar) doesn't make it a good movie. Hehe :)

If your in the U.S., most likely to get the HD channels from cable you'll still need a box. Unless you can find one of those very uncommon TV's with a cable card slot.

If my what in the U.S.?

My cable union transcodes all signals from channels existing before the switch, but if I want to watch a new channel (we have several of those) I'll have to buy the box or a new TV :(:(

think he's saying that if you want to HD programming from your cable provider you're going to need a HD cable box.

I'm in the same boat except mine is only about 5 years old. Unfortunately, I can't afford a HDTV, so if my current TV dies, I'll be without a TV for a while. My family will just have to be satisfied with watching TV online.
