Alternate Universe and s3/4 song

I still have yet to watch TOS so if this is a big part of TOS please just answer this saying that, and no spoilers! :D

In the 4th season of Enterprise it went to the alternate universe similar to the DS9 alternate 'verse. To me this seemed like a completely random event. It in no way had anything to do with all other episodes. What was the purpose of these two episodes?

Also why did they change the song to be a country/hip/whatever remix of Faith of the Heart? I thought it was perfectly fine in 1&2 once I got used to it being an actual song.

The alternate universe you speak of originated in the TOS episode "Mirror, Mirror."

As for the purpose of the ENT mirror episodes, it is just to have fun with different versions of the characters and that universe.

The theme song change came along with the increased intensity of the Xindi arc and the rebranding of the series as Star Trek: Enterprise.

It does also serve as counterpoint to the ``Federation Building'' theme from other shows that season -- that if things all go wrong, then something like this result. It shows the stakes in a way that allows also the expression of the great other theme of the `Mirror' episodes, which is that Constitution-class starships totally rule over everyone and everything ever.

As others have stated, the ENT 'mirror universe (MU)' (as it is called) originated in the TOS epiosde 'Mirror, Mirror'. ENT's depiction is a lot closer to the TOS episode than DS9, though DS9's MU is the same as ENT's. The episode includes a number of other TOS references - the Defiant appeared in TOS's "The Tholian Web", phasing to another universe for unknown reasons (explained in the ENT MU episodes). The Tholians also appeared in "The Tholian Web", and the Gorn were last seen in TOS's "Arena."

The ENT MU episode is the only time a Star Trek series changed its credits especially for an episode.
