Alternate Trek (Spoilers?)

FabiusMaximus

Lieutenant Commander

Discussion of plot rumors below:

Assuming the recent plot rumors of time jumping and alternate universes are true, what changes should we expect and what changes would we want limited in the new trek? It is safe to assume that the characters will look slightly different and the technology will be updated (I don’t think many of us object too strenuously to that) but will the characters act the same and have that same chemistry that we’ve come to expect? If the film is a success, will future adventures of the Enterprise be limited as to what has transpired before or will we as fans accept radical changes to the ship and her crew? I’m not advocating a phaser blast to Sulu’s head as was suggested in an AICN or CHUD forum, but if the timeline is changed almost anything is possible. Is that too unsettling for us as fans or is it exciting in its possibilities? For me, I think this film could be brilliant if executed correctly. Abrams decision to start anew without throwing away what has come before is possibly the best way to continue the franchise. I think we will all be pleasantly surprised at how close it will feel to the original and having LN there will certainly help ease the shock of seeing new actors in the iconic roles. Having stated my opinion, how much change will you be willing to accept? Radical changes to Federation alliances? Destruction of major planets (Earth, Vulcan)? Death of major characters? Crew personality changes? Resurrection of characters who died in the old timeline (wink, wink)? The look of the Enterprise? Much to consider – good thing we have a whole year to discuss them.

I'll take whatever change they chose to throw in the movie. However, I think one of two things will happen. Either:
A)We won't see the future after the past gets fixed so we won't know what happened because f the time travel, or
B)In true Trek form, everything will be returned to exactly the way it was, right down to the last blade of grass.

I think it would be cool if just one thing was slightly moved to the side or something so Old Spock would recognize it at the end and wonder

in yesteryear most of things stayed the same except spock lost his pet.
in city some of us have wondered what effect would the death of the vagrant had. is it possible he could have turned his life around later on or had children.

yeah most things going back to normal but maybe one small change that makes one wonder.

i just dont see the permanent destruction of major planets.
that is just way too different.

You can expect that anything that's substantially changed in the visual design, characters or tone of the thing will remain in the next movie.

They will probably fix the past however most of the design changes will remain in a "close enough" fashion (ie theres fish)

I'll tell you one thing that may possibly be changed in Old Spock's future...

..at the end of this film, when Nimoy's Spock returns to the 24th century, he will find that everything is exactly the way it should be, except (perhaps) Old Jim Kirk - played by Old fat Shatner - will be alive, having "ducked out of the way" of that metal bridge on Veridian III.

This may have happened because Old Opock inadvertantly passed along the knowledge of Kirk's death to Young Spock in a mind meld that takes palce sometime during this film. Then Kirk gets this subliminal info from Spock during a subsequent mind-meld with Spock (say from the one in 'Spectre of the Gun'.)

So would this be considered a reboot, or an alternate timeline? If it is an alternate timeline, then what happens to TNG, DS9, Voy. The only show that would survive would be...Enterprise. YIKES

I know. I get quite a laugh out of that notion. :guffaw:

Doesn't matter what it's "considered;" if the film is a success later films and other productions will be based on its version of Trek.

If the film doesn't succeed, we don't have to worry about "later films."

Kirk didn't get hit by the bridge. He was on it when it fell apart, and fell with it.

^^Thanks for the clarification

I was just being general about the bridge -- the general idea is that Kirk still saves the day on Veridian III, but survives due to Old Spock's inadvertent (or deliberate?) tampering with the timeline during the course of events of this film.

Yuck.

Two words that we wont hear in this movie. Veridian & III. Sorry, Jackson. I honestly think that's a terrible idea. I know its been bandied about in here before, but 95 percent of the movie going audience will walk out of the theatre wondering:

"What the f*ck was the end about? Why was that fat bloke up a mountain?"

I dont think Spock would ever intentionally screw with the timeline either. I know some people want to see Shatner again, but cleary, clearly there is no way to get him into this movie without getting bogged down with all the plot minutia from Generations. I know Shatner keeps banging on that this is a "story problem" that can easily be fixed, but this movie is not about bringing old Kirk back to life. Its primary purpose is to reinvigorate the franchise.

If Old Kirk wasn't dead, they probably would have shoehorned him in too, but this movie isn't here to fix the story problems of 3 movies ago.

"Star Trek : The Search for Kirk" it is not.

Spock: The meridian is three degrees -
Kirk: Veridian? What the hell is veridian?
Spock: I said meridian, captain.
Kirk: Oh yes, of course... carry on.

And yeah, this is probably a reboot of sorts. Let's bash that later, when we have substance. :)

^^I think it would be pretty awkward if they couldn't use the word "three" at all. Of course, I could never pronounce it as a roman numeral anyway. It always sounds like I'm screaming, "III!" :D

Or perhaps he would have sunk even lower, gotten into a barroom brawl, and killed one of Colonel Green's ancestors?

...or pehaps the vagrant was supposed to step on a butterfly later in life, but never got the chance -- a la a reverse of the Bradbury story A Sound of Thunder

I think this alternate time line is a stroke of genius. It allows what we have known for 40 plus years to stand. While at the same time it allows for tptb to put their own stamp on the Star Trek universe.

I have no problem with a radical new time line. I think it offers an endless set of great possibilities.

My one hope (perhaps selfishly so)is that the Kirk and Spock we have known for 40 years get the happy ending they deserve.

24th century Trek erased by a new alternate timeline? Now that is icing on, what I hope will be, one delicous cake!
