Alternate Captains.

People:

I was thinkiing of the TNG eps Parallels and Tapestry, both of which feature alternate captains for NCC-1701-D, as well as the TAS ep Yesteryear which features an alternate first officer for NCC-1701.

What I was wondering is, which characters would you like to have seen wind up as alternate captains on any of the shows or even novels dealing with that?

My first choice would be to see Miles O'Brien take a different career path after his service with Captain Maxwell of the Rutledge. He had some requisite starship commander traits, like building model starships when he was a child. So it would have been nice to see him as captain of Enterprise or commanding officer of Deep Space Nine.

Also, it would have been interesting to see if Ben Finney, if he hadn't made that mistake, wound up commanding Enterprise, as he claimed he had the right to.

Who else would you all have liked to see as an alternate captain?

I would have loved to see Riker as Voyager's captain. He also could have remained a captain after BOBW and gotten his own ship, instead of mysteriously being demoted. Alternatively, Picard is lost to the Borg and Riker stays on the Enterprise. In both cases I'd bring on Shelby as first officer. I'd want Picard to return some day though, so maybe rather than an outright defeat the Borg are merely forced to retreat somehow, keeping Picard available as a recurring villain while also leaving the door open for a future rescue.

I think Scotty would have made a hell of an interesting captain. Mind you, I'm talking abou the skinny, TOS tough-as-nails Scotty who felt the best diplomat was a fully charged bank of phasers. Not the chubby, comic relief Scotty of later years.

I would have liked to have seen Riker leave the Enterprise at BOBW, and Shelby come in as first officer. I think she would have started getting on Picard's nerves and made for some real interesting interplay.

I would have liked to have seen one of the Chief Medical Officers running a ship. It could have been something like MASH in space.

That would've been fun to see more often.

Cool Question.

Voyager would've been cooler if it had been the Maquis ship that survived and Janeway had to be Chakotay's first officer. Or better yet, if they had gotten Michele Forbes to play Ro as thee Maquis officer who has to take command. See her performance on BSG for a take on a female officer who really takes no prisoners.

It would've been nice to see Geordi in more command situations. They kind of foreshadowed that a little bit in that first season episode where he takes command of the bridge. But that never really went anywhere, except in the alternate future of "Timeless."

Also, it would have been nice to see what would've happened had Mayweather been captain of the NX-01. He would've crashed the damn ship into a planet and the series would've died a quicker death. Fuckin' B&B.

Mayweather would have hidden out in the ready room and never made an appearance on the bridge. ;)

Lol! Bang goes every peace treaty the Federation ever made, with a swoosh of phaser fire and an " Up yer shaft!" I would love to have seen Mr Spock try to keep Scotty out of trouble.

maybe stick khan in charge of the enterprise,
or maybe work in charge of voyager that would have been intreasting to see how he got on with the maquis

All very interesting ideas. I also would have liked to see a novel showing what would hae happened if Captain Decker became Enterprise captain and either (a) handled the V'Ger threat with Sonak, or (b) stayed skipper because V'Ger didn't exist. Option (b) might be more compelling, because without V'Ger, Kirk wouldn't have resumed command of Enterprise and stayed an admiral, Spock might have completed his Kolinar training and never returned to Starfleet, and McCoy would have never been drafted to serve on the refit Enterprise. Decker, Sonak, Dr. Chapel, and the rest of the crew would've continued the adventure on the ship. -- RR

I've always been interested in seeing how Geordi would handle the big chair. He proved that he could do it in The Arsenal of Freedom IMO and we know he became captain of a ship in Voyager.

Dax will be Captain of a ship in the upcoming Destiny trilogy of novels.

Would of loved to see Data captain of the Enterprise. He showed twice I think he could handle the responsibilities that came along with captaincy, not to mention Picard trusted the ship unto him should something have happened to himself and Riker.

Agreed! There is a novel set partly in a future time where Data is indeed a starship captain. I think it's Imzadi. -- RR

Yes, he was Commodore Data in command of the Enterprise-F.

It'd be cool to see Worf get his own ship someday, something more substantive than 30 seconds on the Defiant preparing to ram a Borg cube, that is ;). DS9 kind of implied that he never would make captain after "Change of Heart," but then again he's been doing alright for himself on the Enterprise as XO in the latest TNG novels. I'd really like to see his hybrid Starfleet/Klingon style clash with a crew not used to his way of doing things.

D Man:

They did show Worf in command of a fleet of ships in one of the mirror universe DSN eps, where they mocked Captain Picard's signature line, when he howls, "Make it so!" :guffaw:Fun stuff!

I always thought it would be fun to show a parallel universe Enterprise where Spock became Captain, say after The Tholian Web. Spock looked all right in gold -- see Where No Man Has Gone Before.
