Spoilers All Things Evangelion

Rear Admiral
I just realized that there is no thread dedicated to Evangelion and so, since the last film of the Evangelion Rebuild saga is out, I wanted to create one.

I absolutely LOVED this final chapter, but I have to say it's a little a cultural shock realizing that for the Japanese people the biggest problem with humanity is that we sometimes feel a little awkward around others and we would like to communicate our feelings better. A problem so big that it leads to the apocalypse that it would annihilate all of humanity.

Oh, if anyone need a recap of the tv series...

Is the new stuff any good? I watched the original plus the movie some years back, and while it was kind of OK for the most part, at a certain point it felt like watching a show and more like watching the person making the show have a nervous break down in real time (which I fund out later is basically what was going on.) It's not something I'd care to revisit if it's going to be like that...but at the same time a shallow, mindless monsters and robots show wouldn't really appeal to me either.

I absolutely recommend the new saga. It seems that the author has finally recovered from his breakdown :) Compared to the original, Rebuild is a hymn to optimism!

ETA: you have to watch all 4 movies. The first one in same ways it's similar to the show, but diverges toward the end.

It's as bigger mind fuck as always :)

There's a recap at the start but a rewatch of the 3 previous parts is probably a good thing.

Was wondering if they were paying Spike Spencer per word - given Shinji doesn't really speak until 40mins in.

yeeeeeeep!

You MUST. The story is quite different. Unfortunately, I fear that the recap spoiled a lot of surprises...

I believed they are paid by dubbing turns.

OMG I think I ruptured something. :guffaw:

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the greatest anime series ever made. (The original series + End of Eva -- can't speak for the Rebuild movies.)

Back in my anime days, I considered Eva, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Serial Experiments Lain to form a sort of unofficial Mindfuck Trilogy. They're all three baffling and brilliant.

Anime is hit and miss for me. I watched the old series and End of Evangelion last year and I have to say I didn't get it at all. For someone like me who by the end was completely lost storywise and found the majority of the characters unlikeable, are the new movies worth watching?

Good question. If I could make a metaphor, I would say that the old series represents adolescent angst, the new movies represent maturity. And they are much more tight that the old show, story wise.

Of course some questions will remain unanswered, but really, it's a part of its allure.

But if you have any doubts, I could try to answer them. :)

That certainly does sound more like my cup of raktajino.

So pacing is something that's often bothered me in the anime I've watched. Some things feel really draw out while others happen way too quickly. A good example of this is in the episode where Shinji befriends the kid (sorry, I can't remember his name) who turns out to be one of the Angels and has to kill him. This is great story material but it never worked for me because the introduction of the character, them becoming friends or possibly more, his true identity, and the need to kill him all happen in a single episode. Being movies, I assume that kind of thing is handled differently?

The one other big issue I had in the series is I was uncomfortable with how much the characters were sexualized. I know cultural attitudes are different in Japan, but it made me feel icky at times. Is that less of an issue?

It's better yes, and...
the boy ( Kaworu Nagisa) actually remember the tv show (it's like a different timeline) so he want to be sure that this time Shinj will be happy

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.... Ehm, No one has sex with a minor? It's enough?:(

Okay, that sounds interesting.

I guess some things in anime never change.

Though Misato used it as an incentive to get Shinji to pilot the Eva in End of Evangelion

Also the voice of one of the crewmembers on the Wunder had me off IMDB to check if Melissa Rauch (Big Bang Theory) had branched out into Anime dubbing.

Well, fortunately she doesn't do anything similar in the Rebuild version. Perhaps they realized the creepiness of it? If anything, she acts as a substitute mother...

So I've watched the series, read the manga and watched all 4 movies. I watched the newest and final movie today and it disappointed me. It all stems from the direction the films took after the second movie when they took a massive turn in the story they were telling. This might please some but to me it felt like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Anyway, the 4th movie is a continuation on from this and I just wasn't as interested after that. It also drags in places.

The TV series is still better in my opinion, even the final two episodes that had zero budget left. If anyone is looking for a satisfying Evangelion story then I recommend the manga. The manga is complete and only 14 volumes. It shortens some story points but it's the one that felt it had a solid conclusion that wasn't abstract.

I hope this is the last retelling of the series unless they do a live action version in America. But that's it for me on the animated side.

Ehm, No one has sex with a minor? It's enough?
Except that, as with most animes, the female characters are sexualized visually, not only with the design of the character, cute, big breasts but also in how scenes are put together, ass shots from behind, boob shots, girl all sweaty and crumpled to their knees as if they had just orgasmed. The new movie also continues this tradition.
In fact in the series they used to do a preview of the next episode with the words "and don't worry, there will be more fan service". Fan service meaning gratuitous shots of female characters.

I really enjoyed the final movie, it was a fitting end to the film series and the franchise as a whole. It was nice to see that Pen Pen was doing well for himself and now has a family.

Hmm. I watched the Evangelion series a couple of years ago and found it reasonably entertaining. I've watched Lain twice and liked it quite a bit. Maybe I should check out Utena.

Okay, just looked at wikipedia. That's a bit weirder than I was expecting.

Weird, yes. Amazing, also yes. I recommend it highly.

And it looks like the entire series is available — officially! — on YouTube. Here’s episode 1:
