"All Our Yesterdays" Observation/Question

I'm new to this forum, but while watching this episode last night, was curious if anyone else had thought about this:
If McCoy hadn't gone through the time portal with Spock, thus making it necessary for them to return together, do you think Spock would have remained with Zarabeth? I do. He tried to push McCoy through... I think his primitive drive was too strong, and that if he hadn't had to help McCoy return, he would have stayed.

Has this ever been discussed here? Does anyone else have other impressions or thoughts?

Been a while since I've seen this episode, but you're probably right. It took McCoy reminding Spock who he really was and where he belongs. Not an uncommon narrative choice. Spock had to remind Kirk that he couldn't interfere with Edith Keeler's destiny, even if it meant letting her die. Kirk had to stop Spock and Scotty from killing each other because they didn't realize they were being influenced by an alien entity. Reminds me of a Beatles song.

^^ Exactly. Great points.

Spock would've died though since he hadn't been prepared by the atavacron by Atoz. I think this also shows the depth of his desire to remain. :)

It did seem like he really wanted to stay.

This is probably one of my favorite episodes of TOS. It was certainly far superior to the next episode that happened to be the last episode.

If you want to, you should check out the original Trek novels that are a sequel to this episode. The titles are Yesterday's Son and Time for Yesterday.

Thank you! I will!

And, I agree... "Turnabout Intruder" is one that I rarely watch, but I love this one. In fact, I don't know if it's kosher to say it here, but season three has some of my all time favorite episodes.

I believe Yesterday's Son was the first original STAR TREK novel to ever hit the New York Times Bestseller List (as opposed to a movie novelization).
I actually read Time for Yesterday before Yesterday's Son. It was new in the bookstores about the time my love of Trek kicked in. It was actually the second, third and fourth movies that got me into Trek. Strangers from the Sky and Time for Yesterday were some of the first Trek novels I read which were not movie tie-ins.

There are good and bad ones in every season, in any of the shows. But the bad ones in the third season are certainly memorable. :) Spock's Brain, This Way to Eden come to Mind. IMO, Spock's Brain was the worst ever until Voyager's Threshold came out. Now I love Voyager, but Threshold was a real "WTF did I just watch"? moment. My apologies if you like the ones I mentioned.

No need to apologize. We all have ones we hate ("Spock's Brain" is a favorite of mine)... it's subjective. And, "The Way to Eden," although not a particularly beloved one, still has that righteous jam session with Spock that I dig. I'm just thrilled to have found this forum where I can discuss them, regardless of the opinions.

I've had both of them for probably thirty years but never read them! Maybe I should...

I like Spock's Brain and Way to Eden (realizing they're not "good" per se...but I still enjoy them).

Turnabout Intruder is nearly unbearable. Probably one of my only "disliked" episodes of TOS.

All Our Yesterdays, on the other hand, despite having some bizarre plot holes, is wildly entertaining and one of my favorites!

I, too, enjoy 'Spock's Brain' for its' action, adventure and mystery.

^^ Excellent. I know some Trek fans abominate season III, and being new, I didn't want to offend some unknown shibboleth. ;)
