Strange! According to Stephen Fry on QI, German x-mas trees are used to feed Elephants at the Zoo...

Steven Fry is half right: the zoos take only those trees that didn't get sold for christmas. With used ones you can never be sure there's no tinsel, threads, little hooks from the decorations etc. left on them. It'd be too dangerous for the animals.
