Of course, it's gotten to the point that my wife or I quotes something, and I ask her what it was from, and we can't remember anymore!

The problem is that these days you don't only get one-liners from movies and TV, but also from politicians and spinn-doctors, that we, in fact, live in a one-liner culture where everything can be quoted and funny at any other time. In one generation no one will be able to distinguish between historical figures and fictional ones...

That is a nice illustration of how some social rules come to be.

Sometimes people do things that hurt others. Sometimes, they don't even know how harmful their actions are. The others will try to stop or reduce such behaviors. Then, they would pass this new rule or idea to new generations about certain actions that are bad. The new generations learn not to do them, but sometimes they don't understand why.
