I think it's the spraying. They may have the musky smell that comes with being in the weasel family already.

I might have to Google or Wiki the data, but I think the ability to spray their scent is something that doesn't develop until a skunk reaches physical maturity and is able to mate. When they're that young and tiny they might not be much of a problem aside from a natural weasely funk.

Fun fact(I think): did you know that once the scent gland is removed from a skunk by a veterinarian that they are considered to be just as clean and well behaved if not moreso than a domestic housecat? At least that's what I've always heard over the years because of some people wanting to keep skunks as pets.

Yeah, once those glands are removed, think of them as just overly fuzzy ferrets. (I bet they get into as much trouble "stealing" and tearing up things. )

It's not so much the kids playing with the "kittens" as the mother skunk not appreciating the love. The babies may not be able to spray, but the mother sure as hell can. The babies are cute as the dickens, though.
