Hiring a "little person" actor is expensive, let alone the makeup job.

I heard on the radio a few weeks ago about how an English theatre production had saved money by having children play the parts previously given to midgets and having adults read out their lines over a microphone.

If you take into account the differences in environmental needs - even comfortable temperature - it makes sense that most of the crew was one species.

This, to me, makes more sense than any other explanation.
Remember, there was one ship that was entirely crewed by Vulcans...so, there you go...

Agreed, pretty nifty solution to the whole thing. The Vulcan ship would be hotter and have thinner air I'm guessing.

I think that having children of various ages play aliens, perhaps extras walking the corridors and at background consoles, would be a fine idea.

Having a child portray a adult alien as a regular would pose problems, as they continued to grow.

DS9 touched upon this issue in the episode, "The Wire." Garak complained about how the lighting and the temperature were always wrong for him.

The problem with that being, the episode never suggests that Kirk would have been headed towards K7. Rather, he appeared to be diverted there, by the inappropriately sent SOS.

I'm not going to dig out the exact passage; I'm recalling Gerrold's epilogue and anecdote from memory. It probably did mention the SOS.

If you want to argue with the creator of "The Trouble With Tribbles" (and his related gag in a Trek novel), feel free. At your own peril.

But give me sufficient warning, so that I can decide whether to make popcorn or get out of the line of fire.

The name threw me, but since you listed the material I suddenly remembered.

Yeah, the original "Alien" was still a recent blockbuster when that comic was scripted, so the artist paid homage to it. Though to make him Raytag, I'd need to make him read, give him "Kirby shorts", and place a pair of antennae and a frill upon his head that allows him his echo location version of sight.
