Alien5: It's a Bug Hunt (pre-release thread)

And yet it's a near masterpiece compared to the cartoonish fourth movie. And the characters act in much more believable ways than in Prometheus.

I felt they tried (perhaps) too hard to write their way out of the utter dead end of the previous film.

It wasn't the casting, performances, effects, sets or cinematography that was wrong with '3'. It was the whole damned premise for the movie. Whilst the fourth film might not have been as well made, I enjoyed it much more, and it didn't make me angry.

Maybe a retcon explaining the substitution of clones in the 3rd film would be O.K., or something clever...

You know what's ironic? A video game managed to make the Xenomorph scary again. Fucking Alien: Isolation, it gave what was missing back.

I guess I just don't see the point of yet another Sigourney-sequel. Alien 3 is not a bad movie at all (especially the Fincher cut). I think it produces a fine symmetry to the story of Ripley. I just don't see the need to negate that for more Hicks.

Little of that fan-art tells us whether the story will have some radical departure from what we have already seen, and a Hicks/Newt mulligan regarding their deaths is several decades too late.

I'm all for a good Alien movie. Prometheus is an interesting film that goes in some unexpected directions. And Blomkamp is an intriguing filmmaker (though we'll see how Chappie turns out). But I just don't see the need to further explore the character of Ripley at this point, though I'm more than willing for Blomkamp to shock me, here.

One of the concept pieces in particular interests me, one with Ripley wearing what amounts to a Xenomorph (NOT Space Jockey) suit. If this is still the half-alien Ripley 8 of Resurrection (and, frankly, even if it's not), that opens up a very intriguing avenue for her - infiltrating Xeno nests and stalking/hunting them.

Prometheus is a mess of a movie, maybe a sequel might make some sense of it, but there's nothing to save the movie as it stands.

Honestly I think I'd almost rather have Weaver playing Ripley's older, grown up daughter than that weird half-alien clone again (and thankfully the daughter's death was edited out of the theatrical version of Aliens, so it could still be a possibility).

Prometheus/Alien5 crossover:

Elizabeth Shaw and Android David arrive on the Engineer homeworld to find that it has been overrun by Xenomorphs and that AlienRipley is their queen.

The daughter's death scene I think was intended to add some more impact to Ripley and Newt's sort of surrogate mother/daughter relationship (Ripley also mentions it in the special edition when talking to Newt in the sickbay). Newt also-I think in both versions of the film-calls Ripley "mommy" after the Alien Queen is jettisoned.

... I mean, I'm still not motivated to watch either, but 4 at least has Ms. Ryder. ;)

It'll never happen, but it would be hilarious if the film started off on Earth with an older Ripley waking up in terror, turning to an older, scarred Hicks in bed...
Downsides to retconning Alien 3/4 out of the saga: blu ray sales and TV broadcast fees for those movies would likely plummet. (But really, are they worth all that much after all these years? Are there that many fans willing to buy blus of those two who haven't yet done so?)

Upsides to doing the same: fan excitement, lots of positive press and goodwill. Especially if Biehn and Carrie Henn returned, sales and merchandising of Aliens specifically would probably increase much more than they would if the latter sequels stayed canon. Also, Trek XI, the Hulk and Spidey reboots and DOFP have prepared general audiences to think flexibly about canon.

Seems like a good financial as well as artistic move to moi. But, of course, I'm sure Blomkamp has his own vision.

Movies are more than the story told. Prometheus is more relentless in its themes than even Alien.

Yeah Ryder was definitely the one (and only) highlight of that movie. Just a shame the movie wasted such a cool and interesting character.

Alien is a classic horror story. Prometheus though makes no sense, the ship is far more advanced than the Nostromo was, there's no reason for the Engineer to attack humans. And even if one of the Engineers were taken for Jesus as is supposed to be the backstory, they continued to come to earth after Jesus' death. There's just too many inconsistancies with the Alien universe and too many plot holes.

The point of the sequel set-up at the end of the movie is to find out WHY the Engineers decided to wipe out humanity after creating it. I can't wait for it

You can't really make a movie with the hope that a sequel can used to explain the movie in the first place.

Maybe he was using some sort of disguise technology. The historical Jesus BTW probably didn't look like all the artistic interpetations we've gotten used to over the centuries. But I think something like an Engineer's appearence would've looked out of place.

The Engineer's became godlike beings for several people over the centuries, but their appearance doesn't seem be uniform.
