Civilians in the food chain? I don't think the aliens ever preyed directly on humans for food in any of the films. Using their prey as hosts for their larvae, as ichneumon wasps do, would be a better description.

I wouldn't have minded if Hicks and Newt had died later on during the third movie - it was killing them in the opening sequence that was such a mistake. It pissed all over the drama and excitement of the Aliens ending and left us without our identifiable characters. I mean, Hicks and Newt were cool. Can we point to any of the characters in the third movie and say the same? It was a mistake and given a choice of that or a whole bunch of new characters, I would have preferred something new.
