alien invasion genre movies discussion

I came across this one I hadnt seen before:
The Faculty (1998)
Nearly 13 years ago Robert Rodriguez released his hipster invasion flickThe Faculty. The picture started fairly strong, earning some positive reviews, but quickly evaporated into the land of the underappreciated. What some have let slip their minds is that this flashy sci-fi picture is near flawless in areas. The character development is excellent, the acting is fantastic, and the atmosphere hit’s the mark in a major way. It may be flashy, but it’s anything but trashy.
in this article today.
10 Underrated Sci-fi Films
What did you guys think of The Faculty? I haven't seen it yet.

Now since alien invasion films are at a current wave here are some in the pipeline:
"Skyline" scifi thriller/E.T. invasion film

"V" series on ABC has a 10-episode 2nd season order

alien invasion series with Noah Wyle for 2011 on TNT from Dreamworks

"Battle: Los Angeles" 2011 alien invasion scifi action movie

Roland Emmerich's directing "The Zone" under $5 million budget alien invasion movie
"SERES: GENESIS" mexican alien invasion thriller film

The Darkest Hour" (2012) scifi alien invasion thriller 3-D movie

I generally like alien invasion movies, even if the premise is extremely unrealistic in almost every case. If you take into account the following.

1) The Aliens are powerful/advanced enough to reach earth and project their power.
2) They have some motivation that prevents them from just razing the planet in the most efficient way possible(hunks of rock accelerated to a fraction of lightspeed or something).
3) They have some weakness that humans(or germs) can exploit to defeat them.

It really is laughable. There is no way present day Earth would stand any chance against a space faring alien race.

To be honest, I also quite enjoyed The Invasion with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig (if you haven't seen it, it's the most recent adaptation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers) :o;)

I remember enjoying THE FACULTY . . ..

As did I. I liked the way it self-consciously played around with high school archetypes, plus Laura Harris spends most of the of the finale in the nude.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

The Faculty was a great movie, mixing High School genre stereotypes with previously used Alien Invasion plot elements actually became entertaining and well-done in Rodriguez' hands.

Also, it had that great version of Blue Monday in the soundtrack.

i went to see ID4, came home and the old War of the Worlds was on BBC2. it's amazing how much iD4 rips off WOTW.

Aliens land near LA.
Aliens disrupt local communications
aliens wipe out attempt at friendly communication
aliens fight US Marines from El Toro MC base.
aliens have ray shields.
aliens get nuked by a flying wing bomber.
aliens destroy prominent international landmarks.
aliens succumb to a human virus.

stilll enjoyed both, though.

INDEPENDENCE DAY isn't just an homage to WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953)--it lifts from all sorts of alien invasion movies from the 1950s.

I'd like to see THE FACULTY at some point. I assume it doesn't take itself too seriously, given that Robert Rodriguez is the director and Jon Stewart is one of the "actors."

The Faculty lifts from a number of Secret Invasion type stories. There are moments of Body Snatchers, the Thing, etc. It is, however, intelligently written, engaging, and fun.

I haven't seen it since it was first out, but I also remember enjoying it quite a bit. I guess that means it's going into the Netflix queue. :)

And to puerile and sexist, it has Laura Harris walking through the boys locker room, naked.

The Faculty was cool. Certainly better than Sutherland in the Heinlein story The Puppet Masters.
I like Invasion stories. They give a lot of leeway for turning our societal conventions on their ear.

Well, that is probably to be expected from a Rodriguez film as well, is it not?

A hilarious send-up of Hollywood prudishness. It is in answer to the recurrent questions of how these shape-changing monsters always manage to retain their clothing despite the transformation (or remake them immediately after), and why, for that matter, an alien would care about human notions of modesty after being exposed.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I know. I'm just going "Mmm, zug-zug" about Laura Harris being naked. Even though she continued the prudishness tradition by not allowing the director to demonstrate that she was completely nude.
