Warner Bros. Television is in the early stages of developing a reboot of the classic sitcom “ALF,” Variety has confirmed with sources.

No writer is yet attached to the project, which would again explore the misadventures of the titular, cat-eating ALF–which stands for Alien Life Form.

One idea that has reportedly been discussed for the reboot would involve ALF emerging from Area 51–where he has been held captive since the original series finale–and observing how much the world has changed since that time.

I'm not sure we really need this. Everything will be rebooted eventually...

Ehhh...

This is a very much a wait-and-see situation. I don't really see the need for it, but I could be proven wrong.

My interest in this will definitely be based on the people involved.
Given the horror stories I've read, I can't see any of the original cast members returning for this reboot.

I'm not one to crap on this sort of thing. Some of my favorite movies and TV series are sequels, prequels, revivals, spin-offs, remakes and reboots.

Having said that, did anyone even like ALF? I mean, outside of my Uncle George (who must be thrilled right now), is there an audience for this?

EDIT: Wait, the series ended with ALF being captured and imprisoned in Area 51?! That is one bleak ass '80s sitcom ending. Doesn't top Dinosaurs' finale, but damn.

Eh, worked in the 80's and mid-90's, but leave the catfish alone. I don't see why it would work currently.

I was never a fan, but wasn't a good deal of the cuteness of the show the fact that Alf was a puppet? Not a weird uncanny valley CGI monster.

I loved me some Gordon Shumway when I was a kid. I probably wouldn't check out a do-over though, if I'm honest. BUT if that theory of it being a continuation and ALF has been held captive since the '80s and finally gets out, I'd check it out for curiosity alone.

Alf was amazing when I was a kid.

Just think about how amazing ALF could be today. The potential is unlimited! If they can just get Max Wright cleaned up maybe they can get the whole family back together again. Bring those traumatized child actors out of retirement, etc. ALF is the kind of guy to let bygones be bygones so I am sure he won't hold a grudge against the Tanners for letting him get probed for the last 30 years by the alien task force without rescuing him.

Every several years we hear this rumor, this vague Melmacian threat of a return. ALF fans can hope for the best. It was fun to see all the new content they put together for the DVD release - but even that was so long ago. And then some Super Bowl commercials. As long as creator/puppeteer Paul Fusco's still kicking, there's a good chance we'll see ALF return eventually.

Ha!! I kill me.

Wow. I forgot all about that. I don't think I saw it. I was over ALF by then.

Project: ALF. It was a highly forgettable affair. Wikipedia sums it up best: "Project ALF was poorly received when it aired in 1996, namely because of the absence of the Tanners, weak characters, and failure to give a proper conclusion to the series."

Having said that, did anyone even like ALF? I mean, outside of my Uncle George (who must be thrilled right now), is there an audience for this?

That's the genius of it! Film now, find an audience later. ;)
I'm sure they could try and find a new generation to embrace ALF but likely he'll remain in the hearts of the fans from the 80s. Roseanne's recent success could have influenced this decision.

Most of the show used torsos. They had a small guy in a suit in case they needed to do any action scenes or to show ALF going/getting somewhere.

can you educate a casual ALF fan or point me to a good summary on these horror stories?

If this is a continuation and not a reboot, it could be worth looking at.

The short of it is, the shoots were grueling, long and technically frustrating. The filming set was incredibly complicated because there was a small army of technicians controlling ALF as he moved around the Tanner home. One small mistake during a long take would require a lot of setup to go again.

Logistical considerations had the Tanner house set up with many chasms and pits in the floor everywhere, so apparently it was incredibly easy to turn around, take the wrong step and drop into the void. The shot changes, so one pit is covered and another opens up.

Max Wright (Willie Tanner) is said to have been particularly haunted by his experience filming ALF - the unexpected success being the down side. Willie played the butt of most of the jokes on the show as ALF routinely berated him and cost him fortunes plural. ALF lost his baby, had him arrested... blew up his kitchen etc, etc. For four years and 102 episodes that was the schtick.

Max infamously descended into a crack smoking bender which was plastered all over the tabloids some years after the series before returning to the stage. I don't think he's been seen for a few years. There is almost certainly no chance any of the original cast will return. Prove me wrong? I love the Tanners but a sarcastic alien could play off nearly anyone. Roseanne is looking for a show.

An except from the link above:

Gregory (played Brian Tanner): We were rehearsing a script where Max makes kind of a cage for ALF and I get locked up in it. And I flubbed a line and Max flipped out on me. I’m nine years old and he’s screaming. I’m bawling.

Fusco (ALF): He was a classically trained theater actor. I think maybe he would’ve rather been doing theater instead of television, but you take the jobs that come along. I can’t speak for him, but it’s possible he might have felt trapped the longer the series went on.

Cameron: This is one of my favorite show biz stories: They’re blocking a scene and Anne Schedeen (Kate Tanner) says, "Do I really need to be in this scene?" And then someone else asks the same thing. Max was a very hard worker trying to do the show. He started saying, "I’m here to work. Are you here to work?" Pretty soon they’re all screaming at each other and the set clears. As he’s walking off, Max starts screaming. "Put us all on sticks! We’re the puppets here! We’re the puppets!"

I like "ALF", but a continuation in this day and age where everybody is racist and everything is racist except the hypocritical racists pointing the things out, how does the original Alf actor get this job after a video like this?

Thank Christ you got right to the bottom of this problem no one was talking about and most weren't even aware of. It's the Lord's work you're doing.
