An alcohol substitute that mimics its pleasant buzz without leading to drunkenness and hangovers is being developed by scientists.
And there's more:
The new substance could have the added bonus of being "switched off" instantaneously with a pill, to allow drinkers to drive home or return to work.

Synthehol anyone?

Sure it's possible to make a drug that makes you act like you were drunk and possibly also one that gives 'a buzz', it might even be possible to get such a 'new and improved buzz' made legal someplace.

But would the consumer buy it?

Would you?

Benzos? Sign me up. They're no substitute for alcohol, but I wouldn't be against having them readily available  Voted "no" anyway though cause if I want to get drunk, I'll drink alcohol.

I'd need to know more first. I do enjoy drinking alcohol from time to time, but it can have negative effects. I've never gotten a hangover so far, but alcohol isn't the best thing for the body and obviously it can also lead to addiction, which can be incredibly damaging.

If there was something similar that provided some of the same benefits of alcohol but did not have these dangerous side effects then of course I would be interested in it, at the very least.

Assuming it's safe, sure, why not? I rarely drink anyway, but when I do I'd rather have something that's healthier for me and won't get me wasted.

But does it make the girls look prettier at closing time?

Nope, real thing for me please.
Same here. If this comes to pass I'll be hanging out with Scotty.

Me as well

If I'm going to get drunk, by gosh, I want the real thing.

Pretty much my thoughts. If I'm going to try and feel drunk, I'll at least get drunk and have an excuse if I do anything stupid. If I wanted a buzz without any lasting effects, I'd moderate my drinking.

Where's the fun in it?

I like that level of drunk where everything you do feels like a mission.

I like the level of drunk where terrible plans seem like the best thing to do.

Also the level of drunk where I start slapping my friends in the face.
(they don't like it that much, though)

I vaguely remember getting drunk at a friend's cabin and deciding to go find bigfoot. This was around the time that those guys claimed to have found a dead one. We were going to comfort the grieving Mrs. Bigfoot.

The article made it seem like it's intended to be a replacement for alcohol. If that's the case, they can pry my beer from my cold, dead hand!

If it's introduced as an alternative to alcohol, I'll give it a shot, and go from there. I'd still drink regular alcohol though, much more frequently.

What they need to do is develop an antidote pill that works for alcohol. Then we'd be all set.

Come to think of it, I don't recall ever having a hangover and I've drunk until I can no longer lift my head.

I am jealous.

I get hangovers even if I don't drink enough to get drunk. I could have one beer right now, and I'd probably wake up with a headache.
