Alcatraz vs. Terra Nova- Is Fox Going to Chose Between Them?

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I actually preferred Terra Nova to Alcatraz. Yeah it was dopey as all hell, but somehow I still found it more charming and fun than the generic, by the numbers Alcatraz.

Alcatraz could obviously improve with time, but right it feels like just another glorified police procedural. And I got bored with those a long time ago.

Alcatraz is underwhelming, but between that show's strong ratings (held up well in the second week, which is when sci fi shows usually start their fatal nose dive) and Touch's strong debut, it looks like curtains for Terra Nova.

For the record, I'm also unimpressed with Touch, so I'm not rooting for Terra Nova to die die dieeeeee because I'm partisan here. ;) All three shows could die as far as I'm concerned, if FOX will promise not to replace them with cop shows.

Dinosaurs break out of Alcatraz and only an autistic boy can stop them. This fall on FOX.

Here's an article on the whole situation at Fox.

If cancelling Terra Nova means we get Hieroglyph (sounds like a modern-day Indiana Jones soapy adventure), that's a good swap. I'd like to see a series like that.

Here is some of the rational behind Fox’s conundrum. When the network brass made the plan for five drama pilots, none of Fox’s midseason dramas had premiered. Since then, Alcatraz had a solid debut and held well in Week 2. New drama Touch had a strong preview behind American Idol this week. And even newbie The Finder, which looked DOA in its underwhelming premiere, has come back strong with two weeks of double-digit ratings growth. To add to that, bubble drama House returned from a long hiatus with a big ratings bump, also making a case for renewal. And the network also has Terra Nova awaiting word on a second-season pickup.

But neither universe gets even close to the ratings where the dinosaurs sing their hearts out each each week trying to make it big, with the losers ending up in the jaws of a T-Rex with a British accent.

SMACKS HEAD! D'oh - these fools had Kiefer on the payroll and a dinosaur show in the works and they didn't put them together?

FOX deserves to go out of business. :rommie:

Maybe they should have just kept 24 around for another season and have Jack Bauer hunting dinosaurs. It's not like much else was realistic on that show anyway...

Bah! Shitcan both shows and renew Fringe for a final season
Eh...I think TerraNova ended S1 in a great spot, to really be good in a second season, if the writers rise to the occasion. They've got a good base built up, that has lots of possibilities if they capitalize upon them.

I've heard this song & dance before. ;) "This could be a great show, if only the writers would get their shit together."

But they never do, do they? If they were going to produce something good, they would have done that from the start. Fire them and start over with a new show entirely. There must be some good writers in LA.

Heh, yabbut, I actually think they did get their act together by the end of the 1st season, and they only need to continue on from there.

They introduced a new twist to the story's mystery, but I am very skeptical about latching onto the promise of some superdupercool mystery as a motive to keep watching, having been burned too many times in that regards.

I have a new policy: a show has to be worth watching from one minute to the next, not because of something that I might imagine happening someday that won't be as good as I can imagine, so I'm just setting myself up for disappointment.

Other than the mystery element I didn't see any notable improvement in the writing. Or maybe the actors are just so bad overall (with the exception of Steven Lang, who really deserves a better show) that they're squelching the writing and making any improvement hard to discern.

They also seemed to have tied up all the Teen angst threads. I'm sure they won't eliminate that entirely from the show, since it is a Family oriented show, but, I hope by tying all that up, they will do a lot less of it and aahve a better balance of other Plot elements, which will be a definite improvement.

Terra Nova was consistently bland for an entire season. Screw it, these writers have been in the biz long enough to know what they're doing. If this is the best they can come up with, then the show deserves to be canned.

I have watched the first three episodes of Alcatraz and think it has been good so far.

I watched the first seven episodes of Terra Nova. I found the Terra Nova world interesting but the Shannon family very boring. I might eventually get around to watching the rest of th season but I so much better stuff to watch first.
