Albany NY, what to do there

Unexpectedly, I'm off for a two week business trip to Albany NY.

I'm thinking for the weekend between, since we'll not be working the weekend, I'll do the New York City thing. But for the rest of the days, what should I see or do around Albany.

Anyone from the area have some good local spots I should hit?

:techman:

Six Flags Great Escape is an hour's drive north. Don't know much about the city itself other than that Albany Airport is actually in Schenectady, and there's an Amtrak station.

Flukie lives in the area, perhaps he could shed some light on the subject...

Yeah, coincidentally that hotel is near there ;) It's apparently a popular location for visitors due to its proximity.

Albany Airport is in the town of Colonie, just north of the city. The Amtrak Station is in the city of Rensselaer across the Hudson from Albany. Just take a cab.

If you're looking for tourist activities in the Albany area, try the Empire State Plaza. The State Library is there and along with the State Museum (which has a 9/11 exhibit in addition to various other exhibits about the state). The Corning Tower has an observation deck. There is a subterranean concourse that you can take to the Capitol Building where you can join a tour.

There are also tours of the Saratoga National Historic Park (aka Saratoga Battlefield) and the national cemetery where our troops are laid to rest.
Directions:
Take the Northway (I-87) and get off at Exit 14
Follow signs for Route 29 East into Schuylerville.
At the "T" intersection with U.S. Route 4 (Broad Street in Schuylerville), turn right. You will be going south.

Plenty of restaurants and bars in Albany. You might want to check out the schedule for the Times Union Arena.

Thanks for the info, I didn't think about Saratoga, that's a good stop.

I try to go light on the bars on business trips, bad enough with the messed up time schedule.

I don't know how the weather up there is this time of year, but Lake George, which is just north of the Six Flags that was mentioned earlier, is very scenic. There's also Fort William Henry in Lake George Village, if you like colonial history. I'm not sure if it's open year round, though.

If you go to Saratoga Springs, Hattie's Restaurant is really good. The owner beat Bobby Flay in a fried chicken cookoff on Flay's Throwdown show. I usually get the red beans and rice, though.
