Alastair Reynolds signs deal for £1 million pounds for 10 books

I've never read Alastair Reynolds, but I keep seeing his name on the sci fi shelves at the bookstore; this just gives me incentive to try him out.

I just finished the first book in the revelation space series and I was quite suprised by the...lack of complexity...there was literally no sub plot, it just followed the five or so main characters form the beginning of the story to the end. Still not decided if I like that approach or not

I'm about 100 pages into Revelation Space. What exactly do you mean by no subplot? I'm not exactly sure what other kind of approach their is other than telling a story with characters from beginning to end.

I've only read Pushing Ice and while I enjoyed it I did find it quite depressing.

I much prefer the works of Peter F. Hamilton.

Good news. I enjoy Reynold's books very much.

I recently finished Century Rain. Quite interesting alternate history-mystery novel.

which book is a good one to start with.

i just got chasm city but havent started it yet.

Are his books more science drive or character driven? I don't have much patience for science driven works.

yeah my luck of picking up the second book in a series continues..
:P

Chasm City and Revelation Space are pretty much stand alone novels though - you certainly don't need to read Revelation Space first.

You do need to read it before the next two however.

There is a fair bit of science in Revelation Space, but it's certainly interesting. I'm liking the main characters a lot so far. It's going to be very interesting to see where this story goes. I'm about to take a 4 hour test, so I hope they let us read when we're done!

There are four books in the Revelation Space series. Although Chasm City was the second published, it's a stand-alone novel and can be read on it's own. However, Redemption Ark follows the events in Revelation Space, so those you should read in order.

I would recommend Pushing Ice for anyone who's looking for something of his to start off with. Reynolds' books are all heavy on science, but I don't think it eclipses the characters.

The Prefect is set in the Revelation Space universe so make it 5 but like Chasm City it's a standalone novel.

There's science in the novels but I'd say he focuses more on the plot and characters rather than the science.
