Akyazi vs Loknar

There are a lot of Loknar class variants out there. But I've never been sure... is the Akyazi class intended/considered to be part of the Loknar "family lineage", or do people view it as a wholly separate, yet similar, design?

I don't really consider it part of the same family myself, although it does have some basic design similarities. The Loknar is a frigate while the Akyazi and its variants are fast response vessels.

Well for one thing, the Loknar was designed by FASA, while the Akyazi was designed by another fan. I suppose it's possible that whoever designed the Akyazi was influenced by the Loknar, but other than both ships being 'saucers with two nacelles on pylons,' there's really no other similarities between the two. It's like saying that the NX class was inspired from the Loknar only because of that simple arrangement of parts, although we know that's not the case becuase the NX was derived from the Akira class.

In my opinion, Locknar is like Excelsior and Grissom in that all are good ideas executed badly. The parts do not communicate an integrated whole, and they fail to convey a sense of purpose. They all retain the crude, “blocking in” that artists do when working out arrangements and proportions. They all needed to be worked over further to create that integration and communicate utility.

I don’t recall if Todd was influenced by Locknar when he designed Akyazi, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Locknar was one of those ships that frustrated both of us. We liked it, but it just wasn’t a good enough design to make our “cut”.

Akyazi as a Perimeter Action Ship just needed to be lean.

I’d like to see it, the Phobos Locknar, the TOS version and NX-01 in a chart
