Akira Class: Like or not?

It has a nice look, but the over-the-top number of torpedo launchers really gets on my nerves. It can be rationalized, but I feel like if someone had had a two-minute talk with the guy about the way photon torpedoes have been depicted in Trek, he wouldn't have tried putting port and starboard launchers on there.

nope not very keen on it myself i think its the nacelles, dunno why but for some reason they just don't look right, also the insane number of torpedoes the things supposed to have seems daft too

The torpedoes are ridiculous. But luckily on a spaceship, a port is a port and you can justify said ports as any number of things.

I like it, overall. I think there are various elements of it which taken separately do not look good, but here they work. And I too have issues with the "fourteen torpedo launchers" bit. But she still looks good. :techman:

I enjoyed seeing one in VOY: Message in a Bottle, accompanied by two Defiant-class ships. There were some quick but very nice beauty shots. I especially liked the side view. The opening scene of VOY: Relativity showed a brand-new Akira-class ship pulling out of spacedock. And, of course, there were some nice shots of this class in DS9.

Anyway, here's my lllustration of it:

Love the design, just needs some more realistic specs. I tend to just mentally give it a more realistic/TNG-consistent loadout whenever I see it on screen (like two torpedo launchers fore and aft, maybe a group of ten runabouts and and a huge cargo bay for some kind of deep-space colonization mission or something).

I still think that the Akira and Streamrunner split the missions of the long-lived Miranda between them. (Whatever those were...)

It's okay. I would have bought one of the model kits if Polar Lights had gone ahead with it. But it's kinda steampunk for my taste.

Plus it'll always have the stigma of the NX-01 hovering over it for me. ;)

Love the Akira Class. I think it's one of the better designs to come out in a long while. I'm mainly a TOS era (and TOS movie era) Star Trek tech fan, but the Akira is aces in my book.

It's a good looking CL. I did not realize it had torpedo bays in its sides, however, which I'm conflicted about.

Yeah, that's way fanboyish. No reason for any 24th century ship to need more than 2 or 3 tubes each fore and aft.

If we squint, we can pretend the side launchers are those big bay windows like on Voyager. :shifty:
