Considering we blame the Equinox crew for not mutinying against Ransom, I think any rank and even no rank is sufficient.
Remember Quicksilver Janeway was in the same position when she was trying to get past the fortifications to a protected Demon Planet. All she had to do was kill a few people and her crew would be safe.
