Air France flight missing over the Atlantic

More news to be reporting...

RECIFE, Brazil (June 7) — Four more bodies were found Sunday bobbing in the ocean near the spot where an Air France jet is believed to have crashed a week ago, bringing the total number of bodies plucked from the water to six, Brazil's military said.
A French helicopter crew retrieved one body, and Brazilian-led search team recovered three others. None was immediately identified.

Sad as it is to recover bodies, it gives the loved ones closure to know where the person they lost is. They will also give important clues as to what happened, and how we can keep it from happening again.

Planes crashing has becoming so traditional and annoying. Nothing that can making airplanes safer, because they're designing to crashing anywhere in the place here on the earth. I didn't mean to be mean, but it's upsetting me that they didn't do enough to make it safer. I have see new design of airplanes, unfortunately they won't be making it happening until 2030! May god rests their souls, it's very sad.

Huh?

this it worse loss of life in plane crash since September 2001.

10s of millions of people travel on aircraft each year without a crash.

you're more likely to be killed in a traffic accident on the way to the airport than in a place crash.

Aircraft are very safe and while humans are making them and flying them, there's not much that can be done to make the safer.

and they are not, I repeat not indented to crash. Passengers and crew aside, each aircraft represents and investment of 10s of millions of dollars (starting price for an A330 series aircraft is north of $US176million) and then you have the loss of revenue when ever an aircraft is out of service..

Between loss of aircraft, crew, passengers, insurance, investigation, compensatiom, loss of revenue I'd be surprised of Air France wasn't out of pocked $US500mil at least.

yeah i agree with the uh..
as investigations are done there are all type of changed suggested and many done to make planes even more safe.

read some of the national transportation safety board directives some time.

I'm aware of those but was referring more to the supposed claims that they don't do enough to make them safer and won't be doing anything till around 2030. (so I probably could of worded it better).

Ah, as expected, there is a reason why Air France was reluctant to release the specific contents of the automated messages. It's now being revealed that it was probably an airspeed misreading, a known problem, and, from CNN.

Investigators also reported the airline failed to replace a part on the aircraft, as recommended by the manufacturer, Airbus.

The part, of course, is the airspeed instrumentation. It looks like the cause of this crash is pretty obvious despite the initial mystery. This almost caused a couple of other Airbus crashes and just goes to show that if you let a problem grow like that, it *will* bite you in the ass. You take a known problem, throw in some bad weather, and, sadly, this is what happens.

I saw another article a few days ago saying they didn't replace the pitot tube. I'm guessing "as recommended" means there's a nonrequired Airthworthiness Directive to that effect for the plane.

I'm guessing that AD is going to be bumped up to required, now.

That's my understanding, recommend but not required. But, when it almost caused 2 crashes, it's a good idea to get them all changed ASAP! I believe I heard that the FAA told Air France that they must change them but not sure how binding that would be on a foreign airline, especially for flights that don't either originate or arrive in the US.

I believe American 587 in November 2001 was worse than this one.

Right year, wrong month. I heard them say 2001 so probably incorrectly clicked to 9/11.

Understandable. I just remember it well because I had the day off for the Veteran's Day holiday and, like many people, was glued to the tv thinking "An airliner goes down over NYC again?" and hoping it wasn't terrorist-related.

The French pilot's association is recommending that their pilots refuse to fly these planes until Air France replaces the parts. I don't blame them.

Mr Awe

From CNN

Air France has agreed to replace within days sensors on all of its Airbus A330 and A340 airplanes, parts that are suspected of being involved in last week's crash, a pilots' union said Tuesday.

Somehow, the expression "better late than never" doesn't seem to apply. But, I am glad they're changing the parts. Why they let it go for so long I have no idea. These parts almost caused several planes to crash in good weather. And, apparently, it'll just take a couple of days to complete this so it's not a huge deal to do it. Idiots.

It took the pilots refusing to fly those planes to get Air France to do this.

Mr Awe

Something so simple could have saved all those people....

Isn't that usually the way it is? A bolt here, a screw there. A brief inspection or just doing one's job? Prevention could save so many lives, if only it would be done properly. It will happen when people value lives over money.
