Agents of SHIELD First Time Viewing

The original plan was to write Bobbi and Hunter out in order to give them their own spin-off, Marvel's Most Wanted, but ABC didn't pick up the pilot.

Yes, that's right. ABC picked up Inhumans, but not Marvel's Most Wanted. What a world.
I keep hoping ABC would release the pilot so we can see what it was like.

You know this disintegration weapon is supposed to be the big scary new Hydra weapon but it's frankly less scary than a handgun. Easier to dodge with the same effect.

I agree about the strength of the cast.

When you're watching the show it's easy to forget that way stronger powers exist in this universe than the ones we've seen either side use so far.

It reminds me of Buffy a little bit in that it's doing cliche stuff really well with likable characters and a self awareness of genre. And the biggest badasses are women.
We do start to see some bigger, more dramatic powers as we get farther into the show. AoS is another show, kinda like Arrow for DC, that starts out very grounded, but gets bigger and more fantastic as it goes on.

Season 2, Ep 8:

Kyle McLaughlin is become a really interesting psychopath. With the hint it's Whitehill he really wants revenge on. It's always more interesting when there's multiple villains with multiple opposing agendas than when there's one unified big bad.

It's also kind of funny that in 1989, the year of Twin Peaks his loved one died and then he became evil with a personality similar to Evil Coop in The Return, and this aired only two years before it.

Grant is also hard to read here. Also a blatant sociopath willing to kill anyone, but telling two different stories to two different sides neither of which is quite contradicted by what he did to his brother.

Lots of different baddies with lots of different agendas in play, which is awesome.

I’m surprised they killed Trip that way. I would have expected a Wheadon show to be free from certain demographic trends in character killing.

Interesting Rena turned into spiky claw demon and Skye is still pretty.

This thread made me curious to go back and revisit the first episode of Season 1. The tone and focus of the show has certainly changed a lot since then but so has the budget and scope. Skye is so front and center and bright when they show her, very vibrant. You could definitely feel Joss Whedon's hand in that first script, lots of trademark flippant snark and cute comments.

I got really nostalgic watching when I saw

These developments make Skye remind me more and more of a character in a webcomic I once wrote.

In this case it was a girl whose race started to evolve shapeshifting abilities, so evil scientists came and abducted some and wiped out the rest then selectively bred and genetically altered them into super-strong shapeshifter assassins with a narcotic trigger to complete their mission, but who ran away after completing a mission and was on the run. Similar in that she's a genetically bred weapon who is being chased both by people who want to use her and people who want to destroy her for being uncontrollably dangerous, and protected by people who care about her even knowing the possible danger.

Maybe why I keep getting into these Wheadon shows, he likes the same things about genres I do.

Season 2, Ep 12

Edward James Olmos and Lucy Lawless show up. This show really likes plucking from other sci-fi serials.

This business with the ‘Real’ SHIELD is weird. Trope wise no way somebody there isn’t secretly evil, there’s a big section 31 vibe.

I was wondering when the eyeless were going to come for Skye.

Ward is still so hard to read. His goals seem to be decent at this point but he doesn’t care about murdering bystanders.

Do I know the eyeless guy actor from somewhere?

Good show that. Loving the latest season. It’s just a shame they couldn’t get more of the movie actors in it.

Jamie Harris? - He's been in a few things, but AOS is what I tend to remember him from. He's popped up in one off episodes of various things but TURN and Carnival Row seem to have him in multiple episodes.

I believe his betrayal was planned from the beginning, I think I read that they went into the series knowing about Hydra, and basically just had to kill time in the first part of the season until Winter Soldier came out and they were able to get to the real story of the series.
And I hope it's not a spoiler to say that Ward is not going anywhere for several seasons.
I would actually say Ward is all over place...but that would be a spoiler ;)

With Tripp.i was expecting him to be a future SHIELD field director. Daisy's tribute to him was both sad and fun.
And I am glad SHIELD introduced me to "Flowers". She is a great actress

I definitely to see the pilot again. I remember thinking at the time that Skye was Coulson and May's child. Hopefully someday the 3 will do a project with that.

@JirinPanthosa and @tomalak301 ...totally agree about the cast. They love each other outside the story. Check out Dubsmash Wars with Chloe Bennett and clark Gregg vs Hayley Atwell of Agent Carter.

Hope you guys can catch up ... i would love to read your real time analysis of the final shows

My next episode is the Collision Course 2 parter from Season 6. I think my next week I will be all caught up. Without spoilers, I thought that episode featuring Fitz and Simmons from Season 6 was one of the best episodes of the series.

Bobby has a way of expressing with her eyes that everything you’re saying is ridiculous.

She does the same in Orville.

I’m curious how Skye’s mother is alive, is she so immortal she can fully regenerate after having her organs cut out?

Edward James Olmos is also playing his character so much like Adama. I’m wondering if this attempted reunification is a real gesture or if it’s part of a trick.

The way Rena describes her dreams makes me wonder if her hidden power is actual clairvoyance.

Edit: So, end of that episode confirms the clairvoyant theory. Neat. I half expected Cal to be killed in that scene because Ji Yong wanted to give him that one moment of family happiness he wanted before executing sentence.

Have you watched Preacher? Ruth Negga is one of the three main leads. As long as you are pretty much impossible to offend it's an awesome show, and she's great in it.

I too got a lot of Adama from Gonzalez. EJO does really have a great presence on screen.

Season 2, Ep 18:

It's interesting about Skye all it takes her to empathize with her father is talk with him for a short period. Like it took the slightest hint to make her think she can bring him back to his 80s self.

I still can't look at his face and not see Dale Cooper.

IIRC Trip was originally only supposed to be around for the last stretch of season 1 (I forget if he was going to be killed off or not), but they liked the actor so much they brought him back for season 2 for a bit. I think I read somewhere that the actor had another gig to get to so they couldn't hold onto him for long, though it may have been for the best since it's pretty evident that they didn't seem to know what to do with him in season 2. He's mostly just there.

A small note on AoS killing off characters: it's one of the hallmarks of the show that (with a few notable exceptions) they tend not to leave a lot of loose threads at the end of arcs, so if a character leaves the story (especially if they're antagonists) it's usually feet first.

I think that's just how he actually is in real life...

Since you're probably already there by the time you read this; the time to watch 'Age of Ultron' (if that's what you want to do) will be right after episode 19.
