Age of Mythology crashing

I have a 2002 version of Age of Mythology and I'm using a Windows Vista laptop. It plays even new games pretty well. So I got it started and it runs for a few minutes in a scenario or tutorial and then it crashes with a total system lockup. I ran a windows update for the game and got the same. Right now my system is running a little slow after the crashes. I don't know why. Just typing this seems a little jerky. I hope it didn't fry my system. It crashed 3 times.

Is there a fix for an old game or is it hopeless because of Vista?

Vista had problems with some of the older and not so old games (I, for example, had problems with CIV4 and Diablo 2). I haven't tried Age Of Mythology on Vista but I believe it's not a problem with a game but with Vista. Try to run it in XP compatibility mode ...

So the system locked up such that you had to reset the PC, after which it ran slower and continues to do so? That's... odd. If you hadn't reset the PC I'd suspect that the game hadn't actually died and was still sitting there chewing up CPU cycles and RAM, VLC does that on this system occasionally and I have to go into Task Manager and kill the process manually. In your case, though...

I'd suggest updating your video drivers and DirectX and trying again.

I liked AoM. I didn't get into it as much as I did AoE/AoK, but it was fun even so, certainly far more interesting than AoE3.
