After Trek XI... (no spoilers, really)

After Trek XI has made its debut, when we speak of Captain Kirk and the 23rd Century, are we still going to envision William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy or Chris Pine and Zachery Quinto? Is Shatner still going to be a household name? And for Trek literature, any book that will come out now that will be based off the 23rd Century, will it show the faces of Pine and Quinto instead of Shatner and Nimoy? Is this the end for the iconic faces that we all come to love since the dawn of Trek? (And no, I am not dissing anything about Trek XI I'm just murely stating a possible outcome :) )

That's an interesting question :vulcan:... Personally, I'd hope that Shatner and co. will stay, just purely because they've been the characters we've been used to for 40 years. Though I suppose if any books are made as a direct follow-on to Trek XI, then it would have to include the new cast.

That raises a question in itself, I suppose, of whether literature will try and keep the two timelines consistent, or create a kind of 'side' timeline to give the new cast a piece of the action. Hmm, it'll be interesting either way whichever way they go.

I don't think we'll ever be rid of the Shat being a household name. Honestly, I think it really has a lot to do with how well the movie does and how good it is. If America embraces JJ's vision of Star Trek then I think we might see Pine and Quinto as the new faces of Trek. If it doesn't, we'll still see Nimoy and Shatner. I do know that there is a book due out in June, Troublesome Minds, that has TV-era NimoySpock on the cover.

I hope so

I want my Star Trek fresh with a future in front of it. I have no desire to read Star Trek books where I've hashed over every event in every characters lives for 30 years.

I want my Kirk, Spock, McCoy, to be on a new timeline where we won't know the future. Where Kirk won't die two stupid deaths, each one more pointless than the last. 'Bridge on the Captain', indeed.

I want to see a ST book with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto on the COVER!!!!!!!!!!

Two deaths?

Anyway, I guess the image in the public's mind will really be determined by the the success of the different productions. TOS has been around for forty years and most people have seen the iconic images of Shatner/Kirk and Nimoy/Spock at least a couple of times in their lives, even if they don't care for Star Trek or scifi. It's hard to imagine anything new replacing that in a short time, although marketing for the new film probably will make sure the new faces pop up a lot around the release of the movie. Compare it to other remakes (Mission Impossible, King Kong, Get Smart, Emperor Palpetine...) what face do you see when you think about these films?

In reality, Pine and Quinto are the new Kirk and Spock, You can accept this, or not. But remember The Shat, and Nimoy for they were the foundation for these icons. Just like Sean Connery for Bond.
