After Christmas Sales Rumored 75-80% Off...

The store circuit are not as stocked as in years past and bought at firesale prices going into this Christmas. They knew it would be bad but not this bad, mgmt rumors on bbs online are hinting at severe deep discounts immediatly after the holidays in hopes of spurring some manufacturing (hopefully in this country) for the upcoming season.

we could possibly see up to 90% off, but hold off, the econmy may just get worse, redefining the word tank, and those few dollars will mean a lot in about 3-5 months, when "things" won't....

Big layoffs coming for the new year, a lot from companies who didn't want to spring the bad news over the holidays, and i mean a lot...

merry christmas & happy new year

Considering Saks did a brief 70% off a month ago, I think we're definitely looking at 70-80% in January.

Having said that, retailers aren't totally stupid - this Christmas was forecast to be bad and so they reduced stock orders/levels in the run-up. The fact it's turned out even WORSE than those predictions is worrying, but not totally unexpected given the rate of the downturn.

Still, 80% off will be what I will be shooting for in the sales.

I can't wait until January. I may have to take a few days off from work to go shopping.

For once, Education is safe. In a year or so, though, when things catch up, we'll be screwed while the rest of you will be returning to safety.

I'm going to enjoy it now and hide a little money in the bank.

Or go back to grad school.

Great, but who's got money to shop?
I like to pretend that I do. It's not always the case, but it doesn't stop me from spending money anyway.

That said, I'm making just as much money as I always was. If there's one thing people don't cut back on when times are tough, it's alcohol. It's a good time to be a bartender.

I do!!! Looking for a 42' LCD TV.

I didn't get canned with some of my fellow employees, I live with my parents my stocks wipped out 30% of my savings but it is a long term thing so I don't mind.

Ah, I work at Old Navy, and we've had ridiculous sales.

I also have been getting like, 5 hours a week unless I close the store- but then again, that's only usually two extra hours.

economy, aaagh!

therefore, I have no money to go shopping. :-(

It depends on the industry for the discount. Consumer electronics is low margin stuff. Retail on most audio electronics is 40 points (cost is 60% of retail), with speakers often 50 point items. TVs and other video stuff is typically lower, with a 25-30 point retail and maybe only 20 points at MAP. To expect any more than 15% off on video, or maybe 25% off on electronics, is unrealistic.

Of course, discontinued gear is often a greater percentage off, with markdowns from the manufacturers passed onto the consumer.

I avoided doing blanket "everything in the store is XX% off" during my 30 years in retail. Where do you go from there? How do you tell the guy who walks in a day after the sale that 10% off is now a good deal? Plus you trade off long term profit for cash now. Sometimes you have to do this. Cash flow is king. But in the long run, "XX% off everything" sales are a loser for the store.

Although if you have to make payroll on Friday and you don't have the money and you see no other way to get it, you do what you've got to do.

yeah, i think this is where a lot of companies are, especially smaller companies. and for some of the larger companies are doing it to cut there losses, and get buying cash back in their hands. if you can sustain your company with losses that can get you to that next hopefully more profitable season, you do what you need to to survive...

I may, for the first time, actually hit the mall on the day after.. I was there yesterday and saw a few things I'd like to get with my Christmas money from mom...

My wife got a new job about a month ago at a company that's actually insourcing rather than outsourcing. As a result, we've had a bit more of cushion as far as spending goes.

Experts expect the economy and western culture to collapse, and by the second quarter of 2009 most Americans will be eeking out an existence in the ruined remains of our cities, living off rats and the bodies of the dead.

Have a Merry Christmas.

(can you tell I've had all the doom and gloom I can stomach for one year?)

I've always wanted to live in a post apocalyptic world...

Well, we got a good couple of inches thick worth of flyers in today's newspaper and there are ads running on the TV already so I guess things will be in full swing first thing Friday morning.
