Adventures in Hotel Hell

Just came back from a trip to a cousin's wedding in Albany, and I feel it has opened our eyes into checking hotels before booking them. I won't name the hotel in question, but some of you may be astute enough to know which one I'm describing as it's recently been in Albany's local news.

When we got to our destination in Albany, we had trouble finding our Booked Hotel, which was supposed to be part of a major chain. There was no sign, and the address didn't look right, but we went into the building anyway, found out it was still operating, but was in the process of switching over to a different company. Well, get this.

When searching for the address via my kindle, I happened upon some reviews that mentioned bed bugs. Well, no big deal, right? Probably happened a long time ago. It's probably of no concern. In retrospect, that was our first warning sign. Still, we went in and made inquiries because we did have reservations. Well, right at the front desk, they have a notice about the water having been tested for legionnaire's disease. Uh oh. We talk to the girl at the desk who gives us a fact sheet and we ask more questions. According to her, it's not contagious if you don't have a hot shower as it's transmitted via steam. Hello, if you think we're not going to have a hot shower after having driven all this way for a wedding, you're sadly mistaken, lady. The hotel was also according to her, under transition to new "ownership and management", which explained the lack of sign. Things were only going to get more interesting, however. Thankfully next door there was another hotel, a Days Inn which was only too happy to take us in and had lots of rooms available which we later decided to book and cancel the reservations anyone in our party had made with the Booked Hotel. Cute girl at the desk tells us she's not surprised at all, that the Booked Hotel had been in the news several weeks earlier due to its health scare, that it had a bed bug infestation as early as about a week ago on top of the legionnaire's disease. Not good. Not good at all, and then we realize how lucky we were in having made our decision. She told us that a customer had photographed some bed bugs crawling on the curtains. So, it's perhaps no wonder that Booked Hotel's chain didn't want to do anything with them anymore as it apparently had a terrible reputation. Later up in our room at the Days Inn, I decide to do a bit more research and found out that the Booked Hotel was in the process of being condemned, and that some people had ended up in the ICU with an IV drip. What's surprising in all this is that they're still doing business and accepting new bookings. Unbelievable.

They were being rather deceptive about it and not going out of their way to inform those who've previously made bookings with them before this, and the only way to know is to go to the front desk. So, for out of town people who haven't heard the news, not good at all. Almost felt like they were preying on ignorant customers and only concerned with making money. Why this place is still allowed to operate under these conditions is a mystery to me, and I don't expect them to last very long under their new name due to the reputation they have. Next time we'll make sure to check reviews before booking.

^ I would've thought that Legionnaire's disease would be enough of a reason for the state to shut the place, at least temporarily.

Crikey.

Yeah, you'd think so. From what I hear, there's an incubation period , so many might have it and not know it until later if they've slept there and used the shower. Hell, I wouldn't even risk having a cold shower there. The girl at the desk even told us that the water was safe to drink. :wtf: Just giving everyone the fact sheet doesn't seem like nearly enough. Given that my Dad has had pneumonia in the past along with some of my other family that were booked there, it wasn't something to risk.

So, why not post the name of the offending hotel? You want to protect them?! Makes no sense to talk about this seriously bad place to stay but then keep it a secret!

Nope, nothing like that, I assure you. Why would I want to protect a horrible hotel? It's because the major chain it was attached to wasn't at fault, and I didn't want to paint that chain in a bad light considering it's no longer part of that chain even though it's still listed as being part of that chain while looking for reviews of it online at places like Tripadvisor. You understand then why I don't want to post the name it's known as. However, now that you bring it up, it's now simply known as Sovereign Hotel, 1228 Western Ave.

Wow.

And I thought the motel I stayed at in Springfield was bad, with the rotting carpet and channel-lock pliers for shower knobs. I looked in the dresser and all the Gideons left there was a note that said "Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here".

I'd still take that over the bugs and the disease.

Thanks. I always think it's best to be upfront and open about this. The hotel will have to earn back it's reputation, which is reasonable after such serious health violations!

Agreed. I was just trying to be careful about how I referred to it as I didn't want cast blame on the major chain as it was pulling out of it due to the problems. It was a sad state seeing that hotel from my room window. There were hardly any cars there at all. It will have a serious job to do to win back its reputation.

I would've crashed on the couch of a friend. I've been to better hotels in developing countries. Bleh.

^ Were those geared toward tourists, or for ordinary citizens of that given country traveling in-country?

But yeah, some of the hotels I stayed at in Mexico 14 years ago was nicer than most places I stayed in the country (some of them weren't "touristy").

Both.

Funny thing happened to me once in the Philippines. I was outside the hotel, waiting for a cab the guard summoned up and as it was pulling to the curb, a retired army general waltzed over and took it.

Normally I would've protested, as it was rightfully my cab and I had waited 20 minutes for it. But he had bodyguards that were freely carrying assault rifles, slung over their shoulders like a backpack... So I thought it prudent to take another cab..

Still, I can't figure out why he had his own complement of guards, but was sans car and driver?

Good times. Bleh.

Sounds like you went cheap? Perhaps next time go the next step up? Sorry you had to deal with it though, had a few trips for work like that where I let someone else do the planning.

Never again.

I obsessively read reviews online before I book a hotel. It can be time-consuming, but I enjoy finding awesome hotels for cheap, especially when I am planning the trip for other family members. It's amazing what scary information you will find out when you do a little digging; some of the places that look fanciest on the outside and are on the more expensive side are some of the worst at hiding some nasty stuff. Can't judge a book by its cover! Or its name - I have been to certain chain places that were AWESOME, and then went to another in the same chain in a different location and it was disgusting. All you can do is research ahead of time.

Yeah, exactly. I know what you mean, and it's exactly why this has been so eye-opening, why it's so important to check these things ahead of time instead of blindly trusting the brand. Like you, our previous stay at the same chain on the same trip the night before was awesome, so we were a little distressed about this hotel in particular the next day. The hotel next door was a blessing in disguise as it was rather cozy, so it all turned out pretty well in comparison.

The only 'hotel hell' I have ever experienced was not the fault of the hotel itself, just the guests. I seem to have developed an innate ability to attract the noisiest neighbors in any hotel I go to. If I'm taking a trip with my parents I always tell them to get their room as far from mine as possible; that way I get all the noisy people and they can sleep in peace.

My experience's been that some of the bigger chains have a lot of groups check in, like sports teams and such and that it's common for them to be noisy. We had a hockey group that had checked in while we were staying the night before and they were running back and forth down the halls at around midnight, and it even continued a bit after a call to the front desk was made. The advantage of a smaller hotel is that you won't get any of that kind of thing happening.
