Add a character

It's 1969 and you've been tasked with adding a new character to the regular TOS cast to revitalise the show. What do you do?

Owing to Spock's popularity, I'd add another alien character. Perhaps a female Antosian (the people who gifted Garth of Izar with the ability of cellular metamorphosis), so basically I'd add Maya from Space: 1999 to Star Trek with different makeup.

Yes, it's Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie in space, but what would you all do?

The problem with adding another character to TOS is that the show couldn't use all of its present stock. But, that green alien from Elan of Troy, or whatever her name was - the one whom she stabbed - was so over the top, with his hammyness, that he would've given Shatner a run for his money. If he could've been brought onboard as a regular, I would've really enjoyed that, very much. He always gets a laugh out of me, when he's on that one episode ...

The problem with a shape-shifting character is if she turned into another vastly different humanoid in appearance, you'd have to cast another actor. Unless she just always pretends to be someone who is already on-board. The idea for another alien is an interesting one, though.

I like the idea of having a full-time security person. Somebody who could give the other redshirts a break and LIVE.

A grumpy Andorian yeoman to fill the Janice Rand niche that had been empty since mid first season.

I was thinking more along the lines of reusing all of Trek's "monster" costumes (Horta, Gorn, Salt Vampire) in situations where our crew needed to break out of prison, or turning into a random background alien-of-the-week for spying missions etc

Oh, okay. That might work. They could also turn into alien variations on their natural/preferred appearance, I suppose.

I'd probably add a security chief character, since TOS lacked one. And I'd probably make the character a woman, since TOS could use some more female characters.

This would have been balsy, but interesting, for TOS to have done this back in the day.
