Action #1

I've never been a huge comic collector (other than for reading), but I began to dabble way back in the late 1970s. And I remember thumbing though an old Overstreet Price Guide (I remember it had Porky Pig on the cover) and being amazed that people were willing to value comics in the thousands of dollars. I think Action Comics #1 was valued at about $5,000.

Then over the years I watched at Action #1 started to rise, and it kept playing leapfrog with Marvel Comics #1. And I was stunned when the asking price passed the $100,000 mark for these titles.

Well Action #1 just hit the $1 million milestone.

Shh, no one tell the Siegel and Shuster estates - they'd probably want a piece of this action, too!

It's quite amazing to see a comic book (and if anyone wants to have fun with percentages, remember it originally sold for 10 cents) scoring numbers once previously only hit by Picassos and other pieces of fine art. That said, really, is it any different? It's 1930s Americana art. (Though presumably it's been entombed in one of those CPC slabs, so we'll only ever see the cover. I'm generally critical of slabbing, certainly for modern comics, however in this case I'll make a million-dollar exception! And besides, the contents have been reprinted over and over so there's no mystery!)

EDIT: Could a moderator please change the thread title to "Action #1 sells for a million"? For some reason only the first two words were saved and I can't change it now. Thanks.
