Ace of Cakes Cancelled

I was a little disappointed when I saw the link to the story but then I realized I haven't actually watched the show in a while so I guess it's not that big of a deal for me. The site says that Food Network is looking for other projects for Duff but I thought it was the interplay between all the stoners in the bakery that made the show work.

My main criticism of the show was that their "cakes" usually seem to contain more fondant, plywood and styrofoam than actual cake but I guess that's just the way it's done now.

Greatest hits:

Star Trek Cake

Millennium Falcon Cake

BTTF Cake

Lost Cake

I've never really watched the show (not my thing), but I've always wondered, do people actually eat these cakes? Or would they consider that an insult? It's been my experience that the fancier the cake, the less edible/tasty it is.

My problem is too that you get about one slice of cake and most of it is just fondant, plywood and styrofoam.

However BJ, Duff talked about it before and he went "It's a cake! Of course it's suppose to be eaten! It's great cake too!" I think there have a couple dozen flavors of cake too.

I haven't seen it in awhile, I didn't even knew I had Food Network until last week, but I always thought it was a fun, cheap show and saw no reason for it to end. There are many many more shows on the network that should be canceled first.

I see that complaint a lot but I've seen a lot of cake used in there at times, there's just times when you can only do so much with cake as a medium. They've also shown the cakes get mauled by the customers sometimes leaving little behind to the chagrin of Geof. Finally, from what I understand it's standard practice to have a sheet cake or two delivered with these for people to dive into when more cake is needed.

That said, I don't mind dowels and platforms and what not are sometimes employed but I've never been very thrilled when styrofoam is used. There is something inherently unappetizing about that.

I agree with that. I don't really mind the wood too much, you sometimes need a base for the fat to sit on.

However I have seen them stick styrofoam on the piece of wood, and then cover it in fondant. There is no need at all for the styrofoam, they could have used cake.

I watched a few of these, to see them do specific cakes, like the LOST episode. But, really, it gets old pretty fast.

That's surprising, but I too haven't watched in a while. I wonder how much of the audience watch "Cake Boss" on TLC instead?

In addition to that, I am turned off by how many people's hands touch the various pieces of the cake without wearing protective gloves. The cakes are beautiful, but I would never eat one of them based on that alone.

To be fair, I assume they all wash their hands like in any bakery/kitchen. I'm as germ-cautious as the next guy but you have to touch food to prepare it.

It actually was what turned me off to the show (I think I just outgrew anything remotely "stonerish" years ago). Not being a big cake person didn't help either, so I'm not sad to see it go at all, unfortunately.

what does a glove do? The glove is just as dirty as a hand.
Disposable food handling gloves are required wear in most areas of the food service/preparation industry.

I do not trust the cleanliness of people’s hands. They forget to wash after they go to the bathroom, they touch their nose, hair, body, doors, etc. If a person is wearing protective gloves (and changing them frequently), then I don’t have to worry about what is on their hands, or under their fingernails. Also, when people are wearing the clear plastic (or rubber) gloves, they are more conscious of what they touch.

In theory this should at least cut down on the spread of germs.

In general, I just think it looks gross to see people fingering food to that extent when it is for the general public.

Well, that's me never watching Food Network again... :scream:

Ace of Cakes is one of the (many) reasons I stopped watching Food Network.

To be far The Food Network people know this and made a new network; The Cooking Network without the lame food BS some people don't like.

Yeah, but Scripps charges providers such an exorbitant price to carry the Cooking Channel that about two percent of Americans can actually watch it.

They don't touch their nose while wearing gloves? I think you are really living in a fantasy land if you think people wearing gloves are more conscious of what they touch. I wear gloves at McDonald's, the only time I changed them is when they started to piss me off, but I would change them 7-8 times a day and only worked 6 hours. Most changed them once. Plus I would cook frozen chicken, and then frozen beef wearing the same gloves and never thought a thing of it.

My dad worked at an ice cream plant for 25 years, he didn't wear gloves. Someone asked him once why he didn't. His reply was "How many times did you change your gloves today?", the guy replied "2-3". My dad then went "I wash my hands 38 times today, do you not think that gloves get germs?"

Gloves do nothing if you never change them or never wash your hands.

Yeah and the sad reality is that even in the cleanest houses/kitchens/restaurants germs are still everywhere. You'll drive yourself crazy if you think about it too much.

It’s a possibility that they are cleaning the wax out of their ears and scratching their butts too when wearing gloves, but I (we) will have to use our own judgments about where to eat based on the sanitary steps we visibly see people taking when preparing our food.

I feel more comfortable eating food others prepare when they are taking the extra step of wearing gloves (when I’m out eating). There are supposed to be standards and practices in place to make sure employees (of whatever restaurant) are changing gloves regularly and not purposefully cross contaminating.

I’m not militant about it. I’ve seen people prepare my food without wearing gloves, but I still ate it.

Getting back to the “Ace of Cakes”, I rarely see them washing their hands, they have people walking around the cake prep areas that don’t work there and they usually don’t wear hair nets/hats. I wonder how much hair they’ve accidentally rolled out in their cake fondant. Its still fun watching them make the cakes though.

My point is wearing gloves isn't necessarily a good extra step, it's more of a waste of time.

You remind me of my cousin, she can't have her food touch, mash potatoes one side, and if a piece of corn touches it she throws a fit. And she's 21 or something.

I wouldn't buy a cake from them either, mainly because of what you said about the fact there are about 30 people in there and some are like 10 years old.
