Acclaim or popularity - which do you prefer?

Saw a quote from author Terry Erdmann on Wikipedia:

"DS9 was never as popular as its two predecessors, although it arguably was a more critically acclaimed series".

It made we wonder; would fans prefer DS9 to be the most critically acclaimed series or the most popular?

Personally it doesn't really matter to me but I suppose, if I must choose, it would be the critical acclaim I prefer. It's nice to know that professional critics, such as they are, appreciate the shows innovation and all around greatness.

Surely you want a mix of the two popularity and acclaim. Shows can be popular yet meet with little critical acclaim the reverse is also shows true they can suffer from low ratings yet meet with criticla acclaim. And in the TV world you need ratings, which acclaim can bring but equally popularity can bring that as you might want to see why a show is popular receiving critical acclaim.

TNG was popular and meet with critical acclaim

I guess I prefer my own acclaim. :)

It does suck when shows don't meet popularity thresholds and are cancelled (especially serials) or don't get, say, HD treatment.

Having said that, I'm glad DS9 was right where it was in terms of popularity and where it stood from the perspective of the big wigs, otherwise the writers/producers might not have been able to get away with a lot of things (according to one of the extras on the DS9 DVDs).

Neither. I'm thinking legacy, and of all of the offshoots of the original Star Trek I think DS9 is the one most deserving to be remembered and to have a long-lasting legacy. DS9 was Star Trek's zenith: it had the wacky sci-fi, the comedy, the politics, the morality and some great stories, characters and races. It's going to be a very long while until something new in ST eclipses DS9. Personally the franchise should have ended with DS9 and ended on a true high.

I'll go with entertaining. Something DS9 did on occasion but not nearly enough to keep me interested.

Would I want to be subjected to endless debates about Siskira or Dasko, slash fic, or hate threads about how bitchy Bashir can be? No thanks.

I'd rather stuff like DS9 be enjoyed by a wider audience, because it would mean more TV like DS9 would be produced in the future.

But stuff that's acclaimed tends to match up with what I like more than stuff that's popular.
