acceptable casualties (possible spoilers)

It is clear, from reading various posts on this site, and others, that there is a sizable portion of long time fans that will just not like this new movie for whatever reason. There is nothing wrong with that, we all have different tastes.

Based on what you know about the plot, and the visuals as well, what do you think will be the final casualty rate, in terms of a percentage, of fans that will jump of the 'band wagon' once they see this new movie?

Re: acceptable casualties

Very few.

The Purists are going to go nuts when the audiences start lining up to see this movie. The buzz about this thing is astounding. Trust me: the Canoneers are going to be the first ones coming back to JJ, begging forgiveness and asking permission to climb up his ass.

They're going to be slightly uneasy about the whole non-canonical Kirk-Uhura affair that JJ is going to set up, though.

I like your play-by-play..you should get a broadcast gig...

I agree with your summary..and as for Pine shagging that hot chic playing Uhura? All the power to him..she's hot

I hope all the "purist" fanatics jump off the boat. We need to excise the detritus before ST can move on and renew itself like a proper legend is capable of doing.

Re: acceptable casualties

I doubt too many people will jump ship that haven't already done so several decades ago, like TGT.

Re: acceptable casualties

Why would they jump ship? It's those people who will watch it multiple times to make sure they note down every mistake...

How many TNG fans 'bailed out' after they saw Nemesis? I think most of them just ignore the movie instead.

Re: acceptable casualties

Very few if any will jump ship. Most will watch and re-watch the movie, then come here and nitpick to death.
And then they will return to whatever canon they have chosen that suits them.

In any case I wouldn't mind losing all the purists and canon-crazy if that meant Trek XI succeeding to bring lots of new and excited fans into Trek.

Hmmm... drive away the old fans to bring in new fans. Didn't they try that with Enterprise with resounding success?

So they failed with Enterprise....
That means they should never try bringing in new fans again ? Or that inevitably every other attempt will be a failure ?

I'd rather they try and try and maybe get it right than give up altogether and bury Trek once and for all. If they manage to keep the old purists in the process good, if not then personally i won't cry.

Re: acceptable casualties

Jezz whatever happened to spolier tags??
What do we need spoiler tags for in this thread?

I think a few purists will jump the bandwagon. It might be more than a few. But I think there are a lot of people out there who have been "closet Trekkies" for years or who have been fans but want their beloved TOS to make it into the 21st century. I think those people are going to be the happiest -- and the "closet Trekkies" will "come out" because I get the feeling this movie is going to make it "cool" to be a Trekkie. The people who are making all sorts of overdramatic statements ("OMG, this portion of the ship is ___ too ___, I'm not seeing this movie, it's crap!") need to get over themselves.

If you're going to be "driven away" by this movie ... were you ever really a Trek fan? People have this absurd idea that any changes are going to "kill" Trek ... kill what? The franchise? The characters? The stories? The books, movies, episodes? Kill what, exactly? If you're REALLY a Trek fan, you understand this fundamental truth about Trek -- it's not about the gadgets, the ships, the alien races, who went to the Academy with who or when or whatever. Trek is MUCH bigger than any changes J.J. Abrams made in this movie.

Re: acceptable casualties

again, Purists come in all generations. I'm an old fart, watching TOS since '73, and I can't wait to see this movie.

I think if there are masses of average movie-goers lined up to see this film, then some Purists will point to that as evidence that Abrams ruined Star Trek by making it accessible to the lowly "common person".

I can see one inference being made, based on a detail which could be considered spoilerish, but not much else. Just in case, I've added a "possible spoilers" note to the thread title.

I think that, from here on out, people would probably do well to consider this whole forum as "possible spoilers". Once a detail gets out, it will make its way around, in spite of all our efforts to keep people from being spoiled, and any discussion in here is likely to contain allusions to spoilerish details, at the very least.

Re: acceptable casualties

On the other hand... how many of the perpetual complainers here do you expect will go see this movie more times than even its biggest fans?

Ah, very few. The curiosity factor is going to win out.

As I say, just because I'm ambivalent about the ship doesn't mean I won't like the movie. I'll get over it.

It's just one pic. For all we know this ship has one killer beauty angle we've not seen yet.

What matters is the story. If that sucks, no amount of pretty ships is going to save it.

Oh, I can only wonder what will happen if the movie blows chunks...how many years would it take to do another movie/series???

Trek is a harsh mistress. This film will drive away no fans. Some may adopt a TGT-style ambivalence to the JJ-era, but as with all continuity errors/changes, some will retcon this inew material nto their personal canon and happily plod along.

Many will be happy for new Trek. I am one of these.

Didn't they try that with TNG and fail horrifically?

Wait- *Suddenly disappears from the TrekBBS due to never having been a Trekkie*
