Abramverse books to finally come out?

I make it a point of never believe any news stories I read on April 1st unless it is reported on again in the future. I doubt that will be the case here. I find it aggravating when they make fake announcements about stuff that I really want to be true.

It's precisely the kind of cruel practical jokes like this that makes me want to pledge not to go anywhere near the Net on this annual occasion.

OK, that main part that says to me that it's a hoax, is the comment about being out in time for Star trek's anniversary. What anniversary? People don't typically celebrate 48th anniversary of a franchise and the 50th won't be until 2016.

2014 is the 50th anniversary of "The Cage" being filmed and shown to Network exec's.

FYI: Every major company goes all out for April Fools. Google did it with Pokemon this year inside Google Maps.

For what it's worth, this joke left me unscathed. I raised an eyebrow when I saw the thread title, remembered what day it was, and rolled my eyes. And that was pretty much the extent of my reaction. :)

Could these ever get unofficial releases a la Margaret Wander Bonanno's original version of Probe, or is Bad Robot more likely to crack down on that sort of thing than Paramount?

It's unlikely. We authors can't release "unofficial" versions of these manuscripts because they don't belong to us. As the product of work-for-hire agreements, the story outlines and manuscripts are all the property of Star Trek, and it's against the law for us to give away someone else's property without permission.

What we can do, potentially, is cannibalize elements of our Abramsverse novels for other Trek books. I think Greg has already done so with some aspects of his, and I've given some thought to the possibility of doing so with mine.

Mine was tailored so precisely to the characters and setting as established in the movie that I'm not sure there's anything I could salvage from More Beautiful Than Death other than the title. ;)

^Sure, character-wise, there's not a lot from mine that could translate, but there's some worldbuilding stuff I'm rather proud of and would like to find another use for. And maybe a subplot or two involving supporting characters.

It sounds like in cases like this, if they never intend to publish the work, your only recourse is to lock your hard copy in a safe and wait for it to be discovered in 200 years.

But then you'll forget to check the date when you do come upon such a story and then you'll be more likely to believe it.

I bought Greg Cox's TOS novel No Time Like the Past in part because it reminded me quite a lot of what I remember of the synopsis for his JJ Abram's movie-based book. I'm sure that's an oversimplification, but I thought it would be a fun storytelling exercise for my brain: to read NTLtP and "reverse engineer" what the Alt-Universe might have been like. I did also buy it because it looked like a fun story, as well.

I would definitely be interested in snagging any books you and the other authors write that similarly make use of elements of the story you all wrote for the new movies' continuity. I hope that doesn't sound like an odd or silly reason for being interested in a book.
