I do not know if this is real or and April Fools joke, but this is what I just read on Facebook...

Yesterday, CBS, in conjunction with Pocket Books announced that the books set in the Abrams universe will finally see the light of day. Although no release dates were given, Pocket assured fans that they would be out in time for Trek's anniversary with a special gift to accompany them as well.

When asked to comment, JJ said: "I am delighted that fans, old and new will finally get to see what I knew for so long. It is truly an honor to have writers continue my vision."

Further details will be forthcoming.

Can anyone who knows for sure if this is real or not please let us know? Thanks.

I take any news that breaks on April 1st with a huge grain of salt. That quote by Abrams sounds especially fake.

That's why I'm asking. I'm sure we'll get the answer once one of the authors of those ill-fated books shows up to let us know.

Considering there's a quote from Abrams himself in that report, I have my doubts. This doesn't seem like the kind of thing he'd comment on. If anyone from Bad Robot were to comment on this, it would probably be Orci. It was he who commented when the books were pulled, after all. Besides, didn't one of the authors say last spring that the novels were incompatible after STID?

It's not a bad prank, but transparent all the same. I give this a 4/10.

I'm sure someone would have told me and the other authors well before now if this were really happening. I'd agree this is a fairly transparent April Fool's gag.

I think it's kind of shitty to do considering I imagine the authors were disappointed they never got released.

Agreed. Isn't an April Fools' joke supposed to be both amusing and just plausible enough to make you wonder if it's not an April Fools' gag - not something that just rubs salt in a wound in more ways than one?

Not to be too cold hearted about it, but they got paid for their work on the novels anyway, therefore making this prank just barely acceptable. Sure, had the novels been released they would have gotten more money off sales, but that doesn't make this sort of thing in bad taste.

Or maybe I'm a heartless douche? Happy April Fools, y'all.

Well, probably not, at least not for a long time, unless they sold really, really well. It can take a long time to earn out an advance on a tie-in novel, if it ever happens at all.

^ Exactly. The core of my disappointment in the cancellation of those titles is that I was proud of the work I had done on mine; I had made an effort to capture the spirit, tone, and voices of the new universe and its characters, and I thought it was something that fans of the first movie would really enjoy. I'm bummed that they'll likely not get the chance to read it and decide for themselves whether I succeeded.

OK, that main part that says to me that it's a hoax, is the comment about being out in time for Star trek's anniversary. What anniversary? People don't typically celebrate 48th anniversary of a franchise and the 50th won't be until 2016. It's doubtful that they would have announced the final publication of these books if it wasn't supposed to happen for two more years.

I agree with everyone else. April Fool's joke.

Maybe it's my age, but it's things like this that have soured me on April Fool's. I wish that it were true - as are many others, but alas, I fear it isn't. It certainly isn't funny.

About two months ago, the staff members at Galaxy Bookshop in Sydney, Australia, were excitedly telling me that I would be getting "two novels in the same month", and one was a title not yet on my standing order, and did I want it added? The CLB title, "Seek a Newer World", was popping up again as a forthcoming title on the official Simon & Schuster international distributors' list.

I assured them it would turn out to be a computer glitch.
