Abramsverse: The Next Generation

StarFleetVeteran

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
So now we've seen the original series characters recast, but what if they were to bring TNG, or DS9 or any of the other series into the Abramsverse? Who would you cast to be the new Jean-Luc Picard, or the new Benjamin Sisko? I'm going to start thinking about this, but I'd like to see some others thoughts on it.

For some reason I think Jake Gyllenhaal would be good for the role of Data: Take Bubble Boy's wide-eyed wonder and sprinkle in a bit of Jarhead, add a pinch of Donnie Darko (just a pinch I say), and I think he's got the chops to play Starfleet's first android crew member.

I think if they're going to stick with the alternate universe angle and not take a mirror mirror angle, there will be different characters in the Abramsverse TNG. There would probably be a Data. There would also likely be some of the same characters, or different characters with the same names. Then there will also probably be entirely new characters pursuant to the new timeline.

All that being said, I would kind of hope that they'd streamline the cast a bit, make a stronger focus on Picard and his relationship with Riker (basically co-captains)... LaForge always dragged Data to be on the b-squad during missions, elevate Data's role and just cut everyone else loose. No Worf, no Crusher's, and as much as I love Troi; I think she could go too... but bring back Yar.

I can only wonder how relationships with the Romulans and Klingons would be. Would there actually be a Klingon in Starfleet? Or would the Federation and Romulans actually be on better terms by the TNG period? Could there be a Romulan in Starfleet?

If the original universe is now referred to as the "Prime" universe, should we not refer to the new one as the "Sub-Prime" universe?

I doubt there will be an Abramsverse TNG, DS9 or Voyager. By that time, the timeline will have diverged so wildly that it would be extremely unlikely that *any* character from those shows will exist at all.

Unlikely...probably. But if a studio exec thinks it is profitable, then we'll see them again.

The Universe has a plan. There will a TNG DS9 and (gasp) a VOY in the future. It didn't work its butt of getting the "band" together for nothing. ;)

Very unlikely. It would have to be "hip". Kanye West as Sisko. "Excuse me Kira. I'm happy for you, and I'll let you finish. But I'm now Commander of this statiion." It would be awesome.

It's funny someone suggested Gyllenhaal (and nice, btw) but I thought the show Kyle XY was basically a show about Data, so I say Matt Dallas.

Agree with this, except...

YES, Worf (are you nuts? C'mon, it's Worf!) and yes to Crusher, but either get a better actor for Wesley or recast the part as a cute girl genius with a bad temper. And no "acting ensign" bullshit; if Lil Crusher wants to play Starfleet, he/she can enlist and start the career as a Petty Officer or something.

But the Mirror universe diverged ages ago, yet different versions of all the same characters exist in it!

(Same with any alternate universe in the Trek lit.)

It would be highly irrational that after all these dramatic changes in Abramstrek, that there would be a TNG crew with Picard, Riker, Data, etc... chaos theory, butterfly effect... Vulcan's gone, dozens of federation ships destroyed, there's no chance a 100 years later the TNG crew would team up.

And then I don't want them to reboot TNG. I already didn't want them to reboot TOS. Please leave TNG alone!

I wasn't really speculating on the possibility of an Abramsverse TNG or whatever, just IF they did, who you'd like to see cast in the role. Purely hypothetical. So let's stay on topic!

Minus Jake Sisko.

It's funny people die awfully fast in the Mirror Universe and yet we always end up with almost the same people. I think we'd probably see something similar in a new TNG.

However, I think the first TV show based on the new movie's universe will occur in the same time period as the movie, of course.
