Abrams said: "I was not an avid Star Trek fan, I want this to appeal to people who never saw Star Trek or think its days are over.It won’t suffer from the problem that traditional prequels suffer from: that you know all the characters will live".

Who will live and who will die?

Please don't tell me Kirk dies at the end.

Although, I could see Old Spock dying in this one, but I'd really hate to.

A red shirt and the villian? ;)
I don´t know. Maybe old Spock, maybe one of new cast?

So we're going to see Spock die again? Shouldn't Kirk be there for that as well? Maybe it will be young Kirk. That would mean throughout his entire Starfleet career, he will know he will see Spock die.

Now...if that is true, when Spock dies at the hand of Kahn, Kirk would be like, "WTF? Either something's messed up or he's not really dead."

Gotta love time travel. Thanks, Doc Brown.

Old Spock gets it. News at 11. :D

Oh...my...god! Wait till we see threads titled, "Shatner must be kirk, so he can die!", "Shat in XI- Watch him die!", and "Shat dies by tribble! XI rumor"

Wouldn't surprise me if Old Spock died in this one. Last time I heard Nimoy speak at a con, he was pretty adamant about not doing any more Trek - he just wanted to spend time with his family and relax.

I was actually surprised to hear he was in this film because of those comments, which he was quite clear about....and have to wonder if maybe he decided on one last hurrah....but that's it.

Abrams says traditional prequels suffer from everyone knowing all the characters live. Well, characters who are meant to be part of the series live. Villains, supporting characters, and starring characters who are "one-and-offs" die all the time in prequels.
It doesn't matter to the future "Star Trek" movies if older Spock or Pike dies. It obviously doesn't matter if Nero buys it.
So, we may be in for a shock. Uhura? Sulu? Chekov? Scotty? Or even McCoy, Spock, or Kirk? Really, it's a rather WTF thing Abrams said. Maybe they all die in one timeline in order to save the other.

As others have said, this seems to suggest three options for the movie:

1.) It contains multiple timelines, in which case any character can die at any point and not necessarily affect continuity.

2.) The film is set in an alternate timeline, meaning that all bets are off and they plan to change the future from what we know.

3.) Old Spock snuffs it.

Personally I'm betting option 3 as a definite, given Nimoy's previous reluctance to play the character again. I'm betting that the movie gives old Spock some good closure and will let Nimoy once and for all put the character to rest. I'm also betting that there is an element of option 1 in there as well.

Option 1, in skillful hands, can be made to seem like it is "official" until the end of the film. Unfortunately, in the age of the internet, the only people for whom that would remain effective would those who saw the initial screening on opening day.

the death of Nimoy/Spock seems like a good idea to me. Ive always wondered what happened to him post his appearance in TNG, I hope the movie will answer that question.

I agree with that, Spock's fate has always been kind of left hanging in the air since 'Unification'. It would be quite cool for him to die saving his own younger self and the life he had.

I agree with that.

After Old Spock "fixes" the timeline to the best of his ability, he ceases to exist - because the new version of the timeline is just different enough that rather than him some other "Old Spock" exists in the future under somewhat different circumstances.

I'm going with option 1 & 3 combined. Someone mentioned something a few months back about Old Spock giving his younger self his katra - I think that would be interesting if it turned out that way.
