That is how he always operates. He and other people our age grew up in a time where it was still very difficult to know spoilers ahead of time even if you wanted to find all the hints you could, at the end of the day the chances were high that you get your mind blown in your seat because you didn't know what was coming next.

JJ and company know that if people want to seek out spoilers they will eventually find them, but he isn't keeping the secrets for those people, he keeps them for the casual fan who still wants a surprise.

It never really bothers me, but then again I didn't need anyone to say it was Khan or not, I knew 100% for sure they were going with Khan right after Orci talked about wanting to do that Botany Bay shot post credits in ST09. And virtually everyone knew it whether they wanted to believe it or not.

Meanwhile long time Trek fans like my Mother were shocked when she saw it play out on the screen.

I prefer not to be spoiled. I made an exception with Into Darkness, in part to test whether I would find the experience of a first viewing as diminished as I believe spoilers can make it and while I very much enjoyed my first viewing, I still regretted having made the exception to my usual "no-spoilers" approach (beyond official trailers--and even then, for some movies, I avoid those too).

Keep trying to surprise us is the message I would give Abrams if I ever met him.

So far, I have managed to stay away from spoilers from major films when I wanted to. It's not like spoilers lie around everywhere, you have to actively seek and connect them.

I make an effort not to. That said, on multiple occasions I needed to report threads where the subject line included spoiler material, so it's not entirely accurate to say that one has to actively seek them out. To be clear I was just viewing the "New Posts" listing at such times.

No, you really don't. Not on the internet, where every loudmouth and their mother will talk about it. It was damned near impossible for me to stay away from the spoilers, and while I went in directly unspoiled, my hunches ended up being right, because of the extraneous information I picked up reading people's responses and discussions in places where I never figured they would crop up, yet they did.

I got pre-release spoiled in two ways. One was arguably my own fault; the other really wasn't. I watched the video that was tagged as "contains a spoiler if you're well versed in Trek lore". I didn't think I was all that well versed in Trek lore, but I had recently watched Space Seed, so I understood the reference. Even before that I had already seen an internet post that didn't talk about Khan specifically but still got the point across regarding his involvement by mentioning a connection to TWOK. The poster had used white-colored text on a gray background as if people wouldn't be able to read it.
