Hey, I'm still embarrassed that I was gushing over Ben Walker's incredible eyes and I didn't realize that his axe was supposed to be his dick. :rommie: Silly me, missing the subtext. Is my face red or what? :lol:

I can't speak for Abe's axe, but I did definitely get the sense that the Pirates 4 Fountain of Youth was a certain, er, anatomical reference, and one that drips, to boot. :p

Huh. I'll be damned. That it was a phallic symbol hadn't even crossed my mind. What got me about the trailer was that shot of Walker's eyes as he looked up. That's really all it was. I thought he had the most stunning eyes. Struck me like a bell ringing.

It's not just the axe, stj. Women like their action heroes with emotional vulnerability. The kind that makes men gag a little bit. :rommie: Wolverine's tough, he has claws, but he's got that vulnerable shit going on that we chicks like. :D There. You can "call me out on that," as if liking a movie trailer is committing an offense. That Lincoln can also kill vampires is what keeps him from being a Twilight character aka a pussy. I wish I knew why the trailer angers you. There's a difference between something in entertainment that makes you roll your eyes and something that makes you so angry.

I'll give stj credit, discussing a seemingly benign trailer has never been so engrossing, especially when the focal point of said discussion centers around a fucking axe. :)

okay what the F@#k was that!!

went saw hunger games today and they preview for aberham on the big screen it looks really good. and it got a few laughs after the title came out. same with dark shadows.

I leave this thread for ten minutes and pretty soon there's penis pictures...

Anyway, just like happened with Captain America, the movie is getting a name change in foreign markets. Maybe it's understandable that in some countries, they want to make it "President" Lincoln for people who've never heard of the guy, but this is what throws me, completely generic vampire related names:

In Italy and Portugal, meanwhile, the title character is gone entirely. The film will be called "The Legend of the Vampire Hunter" and "Secret Diary of the Vampire Hunter," respectively, in those countries.

They've dropped the whole point of the movie! Are they trying to con audiences into thinking this is part of the Twilight franchise or something? Or maybe The Vampire Diaries is big overseas? (At least in that case, there's a legitimate Civil War connection; seeing Abe cleave Damon Salvatore's treasonous Confederate skull in two would be worth the price of admission by itself. :rommie:)

I think it looks absolutely stunning. I get more excited about this film. I still think this could be the dark horse hit of the summer time.

Love the beginning, with the transition of the Washington Monument from completed to incomplete (nice use of visual metaphor, oooh fancy.)

This could be the movie that finally upsets the Avengers box office rampage. Well, puts a dent in it anyway...

The studio also announced that Benjamin Walker, who portrays the slayer of bloodsuckers, and other members of the cast and crew will treat the thousands of sailors serving aboard the Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to a screening in June.

I'm starting to think that your problem with the ax is that you have the enormous handle of one up your posterior, along with at least one very large insect.

It's a movie. One that in my mind doesn't look all that good. But do you really think anyone not already irredeemably stupid is going to think the civil war was actually above ...vampires?

I truly doubt this movie is going to further the absurd argument that "the war wasn't about slavery," since vampirism is used as a metaphor for slavery. Using metaphor to stand in for something is a fine tradition in sf/f and as long as it's accurate, it's okay. And if the metaphor is needed so that modern audiences can understand the mindset of a distant period of history, the metaphor can actually be better than a straightforward approach to the same material.

Anti-slavery advocates before the war often described slavery as something that threatened the nation as a whole because of its corrupt influence and ability to sap the strength of a free-labor economy. I've never read anyone from 150 years ago use vampirism as a metaphor per se, but that might be just because it didn't become part of popular consciousness till Dracula was published in 1897.

Vampires being far more popular now, they're a good way to translate the mindset of the time into terms a modern audience can understand and also be motivated to pay $12 at the box office to see. ;) If that's the idea, it's pretty ingenious.
