Above all others..THIS

Star Trek is the one franchise that has kept going throughout the years, creating new details and expanding on its cosmos across movies, TV, novels, games, etc. Its had its ups and downs but overall, it's an amazing and impressive achievement. How many franchises could realistically support their own theme park? Star Trek could.

Star Wars could have done the same if they hadn't frakked up with the prequels. I guess it's still possible but they might have to wait for George Lucas to kick the bucket before someone can take over and create a DS9 to the OT's TOS. (Dontcha love how we can speak in code here? :rommie:)

I could never get into Harry Potter and LOTR's story is pretty hollow when you strip away all the frou frou. Those two are also inherently self-limiting - you really can't keep going and going with them.

But the most overrated: Batman. Who gives a frak? This just may be my Marvel vs. DC loyalty talking. Marvel all the way, baby! :bolian:

Aw hell, I was with you until you badmouthed Batman. NEVER disrespect Batman.

Not even the Adam West show.

..well, then again, there is that awful BATMAN animated series in the 70s with Batmite (and okay, yes I admit it..I have them all on DVD)

My favorite franchise is Star Trek and it is very good quality science fiction and the new movie raised the bar as far as quality goes.

I really loved the new movie Avatar and like it or not I think the special effects are the new standard all movies will be measured by.

I just love the Lord of the Ring trilogy and think that is another measuring tool for the quality of science fiction and fantasy films.

Another favorite franchise for me is Jurassic Park although the second movie is average and I really like the first and the third the best.

Count me as one who likes all Star Wars trilogies equally and while they're not without problems I do think they are quality films.

I do think Indiana Jones is a bit overrated. The first and the third movies are my favorites while the second movie is really not good and the most recent movie was enjoyable but not as good as the first and the third movie.

The Harry Potter and Matrix movies are overrated in my opinion.

Is that the one that used music from Star Trek: TAS? If so, I agree, it was pretty bad, but hell, I own those DVD's too.

What can I say? It's Batman.

The OP did specify franchise of 4 films or more. Of sci-fi films, that is. Consequently, that leaves out LOTR ... at least until "The Hobbit" comes out. Once that happens, all best are off. ;)

Precisely. In fact, in my eyes, LOTR will win this by default when "The Hobbit" comes out. It doesn't matter if that film is terrible (which seems less than likely to me), the Jackson triloy is in and of itself the best franchise achievement of sci-fi/fantasy filmmaking.

Besides that I'm sort of disappointed by the paltry showings. This world of 'franchises' is littered by would-have beens and coulda beens, and any franchise that goes on long enough varies preposterously much in quality. Just consider, say, the Godzilla series, which is probably the longest running sci-fi/fantasy film series. The awful, the mediocre, the dismal, the forgettable, and oh yeah, the cinematic classic people have been milking for generations.

King Kong also has enough movies to qualify (there was a sequel to the original film and also the 1970s remake, giving us five even if we don't count his crossover fight with Godzilla!) but who the hell wants to count that? Let us pretend that in 1933 when the Willis O'Brien stop motion gorrilla fell to the ground the story concluded that day and none would return to milk his tale for every dime it was worth.

So in the tradition of such latitude, I'm giving the mantle to Star Trek. It's got more than three movies I'd feel comfortable watching several times and are really damn good fun. Star Wars peaked with Empire and has been slipping ever since, despite a rather gaudy hiccup in 2005. An honourary nod and second place... to Batman, whose Burton and Nolan periods are pretty watchable, which means we've got three good movies and one which has good elements (Burton's first, if you're curious).

Also, wait, more people are bothered by Temis dissing Batman than LOTR? I feel sad now. Cameron's comment about there being too many comic book movies seems more and more pertinent to me with each passing day.

Possible Future Best: Avatar. Yeah, I said it. :)

It's got definite potential, but not LOTR-felling majesty. We'll see.

I just don't see 4 Avatar movies getting made..and if they do, and Cameron doesn't have anything to do with them, they will suck, IMO, and will not be highly thought-of.

Aliens is in this boat...Alien (Ridley Scott) Aliens (Cameron)..after that it gets pretty bumpy, and the Alien V Predator movies bring them down to Superman 4 realm....
