About Thelin.

I recall that Thalin appeared in a bit of "fan fiction" that was published in the defunct Enterprise Incidents. The story, iirc, had Thalin dreaming of the Spock-less timeline, which forces him to seek out the Guardian of Forever. The Guardian then allows Thalin to see what his life would've been like had he been first officer of the Enterprise. Let's just say there was a bit of slash also going on in the alternate timeline.

I got this issue when I was a kid and re-read it when I was a teenager. It's thus gone into the ether.

A lot of slash. :eek:

The Thelin fanfic stories were written by infamous filksinger, Leslie Fish. In these, Alternate Timeline Thelin was in a relationship with a male human named Blackie (IIRC). Ambassador Shras, the supposedly-male elderly Andorian in "Journey to Babel" was also revealed to be Thelin's aunt in these stories.

I actually have permission to publish web versions of Leslie's stories: the one reprinted in "Enterprise Incidents", plus its prequel (or sequel?), "Winterlight". So far, the only work of hers that I've put up is her 1976 essay, "A Summary of the Physiological Roots of Andorian Culture" at;

Wow! Kind of scary, these examples of slash! But oh well, whatever gets you through the night, is all right! -- RR

Me, I have to wonder why there's any problem with Thelin being grey-skinned. I mean, humans come in a wide variety of designer colors, so why assume that all non-Aenar Andorians must be equally blue? Maybe grey-skinned Andorians are just another ethnic minority.

I don't have a *problem* with it; I just rationalize that it's simply because of badly done animation (in other words, all animation done in the 70's). The same kind that causes characters' uniform colors to randomly change, human skin tones to look deathly pale, Klingon uniforms coming up pink/purple, etc. ;)

Besides, isn't Thelin's face (on the cover of Echoes And Refractions) blue?

That picture of Thelin is not just done in the Filmation style, it's directly traced from TAS. It's from the scene when we first see him as he enters the transporter room in Yesteryear. All they did was alter the uniform.

And what do you all think of the possibility of Aenar ancestry?

Well, I picked up the book tonight, and the story does inform you of Thelin's ancestry - in its first few pages. And, on page 495, my Andorian website and I get "thank you" messages from Geoff T.!

I must get back to my updates.

Wow, thanks Geoff!

To my knowledge after years and years of reading books and graphic novels I've never seen his name mentioned anywhere else in the TREK universe. I guess we're all meant to conclude/assume that when the proper timeline was restored in "Yesteryear" that Thelin ceased to exist...at least as Enterprise first officer.

Sure, it's possible, Christopher. Just as of this moment, it's not canon. It would be nice to have some other races that aren't so mono-colored. Hell, years ago, I had the idea that there were were yellow-skinned or green-skinned Andorians who were a mistreated ethnic minority in years past, and wondered what such a character would be like if he/she joined Starfleet. So I can buy grey Andorians, no problem! -- RR

Without reading all the works referenced in this thread, I have another follow-up question: Has Thelin ever appeared in a novel or comic set in the main ST chronology where Spock lived, so that he's on another ship at the same time as Enterprise? -- RR

Nothing licensed, no. I always assumed he died at the equivalent of Vulcan age seven.

That's an interesting thought, kind of a "balance of the universe" kind of deal. Me, I think he does exist in our heroes' timeline and is the stalwart science officer on another Constitution-class starship. Hey, if he was good enough to be on Enterprise, why not? -- RR
