Well, yes and no. It says right there in the article that KFC's own public relations people framed the name-change from a not wanting to be associated purely with fried food standpoint (and they did put out numerous ads to that effect as I recall), so I did hear the reason they actually gave, it just turns out it wasn't the real reason they did it.
Didn't know about Kentucky trademarking their name though; that seems a tad unreasonable.
