But FIRST! Happy Valentines Day forum, I LOVE YOU ALL!

Here is your Valentine's Day card, OH FORUM OF MY HEART..

And now, the thread.

In the episode The Disease Harry Kim demands that Our Captain change her mind because he is in love. He asks her "have you ever been in love?!" as if this will make her all softened towards his plight.. and then of course a big drama interrupts them before she can give him an answer. He wants to know if she could have taken a hypospray to get rid of her negative feelings after being dumped by Mark, would she have?

Now personally I think if she had felt her broken heart was interfering with her ability to do her job she would have taken that hypospray. But she coped with it, she had perhaps already prepared herself because she knew it likely Voyager would have been declared lost. Harry acts like this is some affront to humanity but ffs they are on the front line! They don't have the luxury of moping around FEELING stuff deeply, and they don't have the luxury of any member of the crew checking out of his or her responsibilities because they are "in love". Harry is an idiot but.. BUT.. I think if this scene had not been interrupted by drama Janeway would have capitulated to him. She would have taken on board his emotive rantings and rescinded her directive that he de-infatuate himself via the EMH's cocktail of chemicals. I think this is the way the character was written, she is susceptible to emotive pleas. I wouldn't agree with her, but that's how I think it would have gone down.

Do you think Harry Kim's wah wah demands would have swayed the Captain's heart?

If you could use a hypospray to get rid of unwanted feelings of either infatuation or a broken heart would you?

Here is the scene:

Never! That's what love is all about! Risk of getting hurt and stuff!

Seriously though, great thread. Happy Valentine's Day, guys!

Ah...

DH Lawrence:“For my part, I prefer my heart to be broken. It is so lovely, dawn-kaleidoscopic within the crack.”

or to quote the much-maligned V.

"I don't want my pain taken away!".

So no hypospray. Harry was such a wah wah wuss.

Plus, Harry is such an arse for even asking that question.

I love love. And the pain and joy that brings.

I would definitely take the hypospray to get rid of unwanted feelings. I figure a lot of infatuation is chemical anyway, I'm not tweaking the actual circumstances I'm just leveling the playing field so it isn't me versus my brain chemistry.

I think it might be a Catholic thing, Mortification and all that.

So, still no hypo. Though it does seem logical.

Now that's out of the way, let's see what we've got, here ...

#1) Do you think Harry Kim's wah wah demands would have swayed the Captain's heart?

It would've tugged at her heart strings, but it wouldn't have influenced her, as Captain. I suspect Janeway would've channelled her Inner Picard and given Kim a speech. One similar to what Picard was telling Shinzon in the Romulan Senate, about not letting feelings have undue influence over him, professionally. I want to play Devil's Advocate here, and come up with something unexpectedly clever for her, but it is what it is. Kim's a smacked ass who needs to learn his place. That's it.

#2) If you could use a hypospray to get rid of unwanted feelings of either infatuation or a broken heart would you?
No, but I would like it handy to use on certain females who were turned-on by me, without my meaning to do it. If the substance could be used in a spray bottle of some type, where no contact had to be made, I could just give her a snootfull of what-for ... and go about my business.

#1) Do you think Harry Kim's wah wah demands would have swayed the Captain's heart?

No, cos i don't think she ever thought he was in love....just a little infatuated....he was experiencing his first sexually intense relationship....people mistake that for love on a daily basis....i think she knew that but she also knew that Kim had always been a good, pliant officer up until then so she gave him some slack

#2) If you could use a hypospray to get rid of unwanted feelings of either infatuation or a broken heart would you?

Yes, why not....but does that mean they're gone for good or will they simply return if i continue to be around that person....would i develop feelings for the same person in different circumstances (like in "unforgettable" which is a far superior episode about love because it reminds us that these feelings might not always develop even if it's with the same person because love is a often a question of ideal circumstances)

#1) Do you think Harry Kim's wah wah demands would have swayed the Captain's heart?

Yes, Janeway was clearly reconsidering her position when the emergency interrupted them. I think she was also realizing her 'surrogate mother" of Kim thing had gone way too far. She was reacting personally and not professionally. In the final scene, she acted as a Captain again instead of a pissed off mother.

#2) If you could use a hypospray to get rid of unwanted feelings of either infatuation or a broken heart would you?

I feel like this is a question with no answer. Ask someone who's feeling fine if they need painkillers, unless they have a substance abuse problem, they'll say no. Ask someone who just got dumped by the woman/man of their dreams and can barely summon the energy to get out of bed or live their life, they would probably say yes.

Answer to question 1.

Nope.
Harry is young and probably hasn't dealt with loss as much as Janeway. He needed to Buck up. She did react like a pissed off mother though.

Answer to question 2

Nope. Just deal with it and get on. Can't sit in a dark mansion in a raggedy wedding dress with a rotting cake and the clocks stopped at twenty to nine for the rest of my life.
